This review is from: Reflective Parenting (Paperback)
This is an excellent book - building on the exciting developments from developmental psychology and neuroscience research and their application in novel therapeutic approaches ("mentalization") that have a reassuring air of normalcy about them. Here, two authors who seriously know what they are about and are experts in practice with serious track records, turn this into something that non-experts (well, expert parents who don't have to be therapy maestros as well) can really chew on and get the benefit of. It's good when self evident commonsense turns out to be sensible in scientific terms, too, and when humour is allowed in. Above all, this is a reassuring book - we are all flawed, we are all players in the comedy of errors, and we can be that and still be reflective, and it is that reflective quality that allows our kids to learn from us, and protects them from our inevitable blunders. If you are parent (I am), I'd recommend it. If you are professional in the field (I am) I'd recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you've felt pain and rage, and still love beauty buy this., 4 Feb. 2016

Gorgeous follow up to their earlier EP. Had been waiting keenly for this, and it exceeds expectations. Fabulous recording quality - rich live acoustic feel with powerful entrances from electric guitar and a full horn section in parts. This is an album by young musicians old before their time - full of riches; melodies and harmonies from the the brothers' voices that tug the soul out by its roots, bursts of snarling fury mix with glimpse after glimpse of delicate fleeting beauty, and just when you think one song takes the prize, another sweeps you away. There's a lot about movement, territory, loss, powerlessness, misunderstandings - with phrases that echo on after you've stopped listening - the lyrics repay repeated mining, and some make you want to cry (Winter to Spring). Tight rhythms that you want to dance to (I Grow Cold is already a festival hit, and so are Naiad II and No Midas), one moment its like you've discovered something medieval (Naiad I), the next it's startlingly contemporary (Naiad II, Cruellest Kind). Wild Sound Recordings is fast becoming a label to watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is for keeps (and Simon Cowell and your dead-eyed ghasts, just keep away from 'em), 26 Oct. 2014

This is startling stuff. Acoustic guitar, soaring fiddle, haunting harmonies and banging rhythms - can't get the melodies out of my head. This is songwriting! Hard to believe these guys were aged between 16 and 14 when they wrote and recorded this stuff - So f**k you Simon Cowell and all your bloodless carnival of grisly plastic shite-wagons, this is what real creativity looks like and I pray these boys go nowhere near you and all your soulsucking dollardriven ilk. Bands in their thirties'd be more than chuffed to come out with songs of this quality and performances of such virtuosity. Watch out for these guys 'cos they have the future written all over them. Simply. Beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Triumphant second album, 27 Aug. 2014

Clearly something of a struggle to write and produce (as every self respecting second album properly should be - see the wonderful video about the making of it on Vevo) it is a triumph.

This is a wonderful album from a band that has consistently thrilled over the past years since their early incarnation as The Godwits. Liddle's soaring vocals offer a fagility and vulnerability that invites curiosity and awe. The musical arrangements are tight as drumskins, but without losing the sense of roots-folk-inspired freedom that has been so compelling in their earlier releases. Lyrics are dense, yeatsian, and thoroughly modern too... If this album leaves you unmoved do consider going to see a cardiologist, as you may not actually be alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where next?!, 16 Jun. 2013
It seems unfair that one so young can bring out albums of such startling maturity... This album is superb if you like your music nuanced, richly variegated, and ready for repeated mining, because Marling's songs are rich seams that keep giving. Her voice swings between breathlessly sweet and dangerously enraged - don't cross this woman in love, and what a role model for empowerment: required listening for all daughters.

I'm left wondering where next, and wanting to reassure Marling (a reassurance she certainly has no need of) that she can take her time. She is already the most exciting song writer of her generation and we should be celebrating her! Is that enough for now? Buy this album, or be forever outside the party, looking in through misted windows.

Lives up to its reputation in other reviews. Natural sound, very hard to get any feedback however hard you try, easy to fit and switch between instruments.

So many cables are a bit naff and just feel cheap. This doesn't; lovely heavy feel, plugs are well engineered - very good for sofa-surfing your ipod.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quiet masterpiece, 28 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a gem of a film, and I fear I am about to gush; it is one to be savoured with the volume turned up loud, and all possibility of interruption pushed as far away as you can muster without becoming too aggressive. Tracking shots of gulls - how long can that hold my imagination? Plenty, believe me, and this film offers a whole social and economic history of the Isles to boot; all through the lens of what comes in and out of the ports, clips of extraordinary candour - some from the very beginning of the age of moving pictures (face to face with Edwardians, peering proudly, gauchely, at the camera - as though they were looking into a portal directly into the future - which it turns out they were...) and marching forwards to modern day. The editing is seamless, superb, quite breathtaking - unlike most documentary film with know-it-all narration, this one gives you time to think, and feel - and the absence of narration is simply a huge relief, particularly as much of the film was shot without sound. Did I mention the soaring British Sea Power soundtrack? This is a band that ploughs a thoroughly different furrow, and this is marvellous stuff, even for their own high standards - sensitive, stirring, haunting sounds that echo much of their magnificent recorded work, but which is also new, different and perfectly supports the images. Oh, I could go on, but I am off to watch it again instead.
