One of the most lacklustre Prince shows I've heard (and I've heard a lot!), which is a shame because the quality is pretty good. Being Prince it is still a decent show, but this incarnation of the band didn't really gel and it doesn't have the spark of a typical Prince performance. Note that there is another release with this show on plus some bonus tracks - both are sourced from the Sabotage bootleg "Spanish harem" I think

This is an edited version of one of the best concerts of all time. It would be worth getting if not for the fact a double disc release is available with the full concert, including the amazing 19 minute finale of Purple Rain! Look for purple reign in new York instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars About time!, 3 April 2016

The original CD release of this album was appalling, thin, weak and lacking punch, a very poor representation of this seminal album. The remaster corrects this, delivering a very well balanced mix that shows the great talent and freshness that Faith No More brought to the rock world at their peak. The second disc collects some odds and ends that are all worthwhile, though it's a shame the classic Perfect Crime from Bill & Ted is not included (Sweet Emotion, an early, rougher version with different lyrics is).

It's a shame we've had to wait 25 years for justice to be done to the album on CD (the original vinyl was fine... it sounded like THIS in fact), which has probably cost FNM the recognition they deserve amongst younger generations as the band that reinvented and reinvigorated "Heavy Metal", opening it up to a wider audience and creating the space in which Nirvana, Soundgarden, NIN etc could grow. Hopefully a new generation of fans will discover it now.

A project involving Jesu/Justin Broadrick, members of Low and Rachel Goswell of Slowdive... about the most exciting news I'd heard in a while. Didn't really know anything about Sun Kil Moon but figured he had good taste in musicians and the result was bound to be interesting. Maybe it is... but it's not enjoyable. Most of the tracks seem to be Broadrick/Kozelek collaborations, but the combination of JKB's diffuse, textural music and Kozelek's narrative lyrics is horribly jarring. Jesu's vocals are usually so buried in the mix that they become part of the general soundscape as it washes over you with only occasional nibbles at the linguistic centres of your brain, whilst Kozelek's lyrics are basically telling you stories (actually, literally, reading from his diary or a letter from a fan at times). This makes it really hard to lose yourself in the atmosphere of the music, forcing you to pay too much attention to something that should be subliminal. Having this much attention drawn to the music is especially harmful because they are far from Jesu's best work, sounding like rough demos rather than fully developed pieces in many cases.

I don't know what Sun Kil Moon fans will make of it - if you are the kind of music fan who focuses on the words more than the music, I suppose you might enjoy this experience more. I rarely care or even listen to the words in the music I like, with a few exceptions where the wordcraft is truly exceptional. Kozelek basically just seems to be listing things that he has seen or done most of the time, or dropping names of things that he thinks are cool, or uncool, or whatever... the bits I paid attention to didn't seem likely to profoundly affect my perception of life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 29 Mar. 2016

Disappointing after the excellent first season. Characters cease to be realistic and relatable, and the plot is driven more by woo woo than by the character development.

Nice to see a film that is not afraid to tackle the science part of science fiction seriously. The overall premise of the film is ludicrous, of course (when it is revealed!), but most of the detail along the way is solid science, and the space bound scenes are realised with an attention to detail equal to Gravity or 2001 (and tragically little else!)

Great fun! Mad Max meets Machine Girl, with a splash of Kung Fury. Over the top violence and silliness but with a nice little story at heart, and well put together.

Sion Sono has definitely taken Takashi Miike''s crown for the most original, unpredictable and prolific director working in Japan. Who would have expected a hip hop musical martial arts spectacle that spans a single night when a yakuza turf war breaks out amongst the various tokyo tribes? Fairly confident it''s not quite like anything else you've seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty amazing, 4 Jan. 2016

Streamed this album somewhat randomly, by track 4 knew it needed purchasing. Probably my favourite acquisition of 2015 - quirky, infectious pop music layered with seemingly endless depth and creativity. Does lose momentum a little in the middle, but picks back up again for some killer tracks towards the end. If the rest of the pop world put even half as much effort into their composition and production the charts would be a vastly more interesting place.
