5.0 out of 5 stars One of Boyle's Best, 20 Aug. 2007
This review is from: Sunshine [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
Technically, this is his best film...I just have a soft spot for Shallow Grave.
This film seems to be dividing people on Amazon, although not many other places. Basically, this isn't a film for everyone. It relies heavily on the viewer piecing things together on their own, from the facts given (somewhere...sometimes the explanation preceeds the event by half the film).
It's fantasticly shot on a modest budget, with effects that are solid and grounded. The audio is a major treat, as well, and is vital to the sun itself as a character in the film.
Some of the deaths are formulaic, there are a few leaps of logic are bizarre, but the movie still gets 5 stars from me because of the presentation...actors, director, script, and FX are all in sync and tell one hell of a story.

Normally, I wouldn't address someone else's review, but I have to, in this case:
"1) The story is about the sun cooling down, and the crew onboard the Icarus 2 needs to heat it up again with a bomb. Unless you've read anything beforehand, you're likely to miss the whole point of the actual mission, because it's hardly discussed."

Not sure what film you were watching, because it's repeatedly mentioned in the film, openly discussed in several scenes, and it's entirely explained in the opening monologue in the first seconds of the movie.

"2) They find the Icarus 1, where everyone is dead, but you get no explanation for anything here either. "
It's there, they just don't spell it out for you. Personally, I like that.

"3) People being shot from one ship to the other in space without spacesuits, and surviving. Need I say more."

Much more likely than what happens to another crew member, as mentioned in another review.

4) The captain of Icarus one suddenly appears onboard Icarus 2 (alive again, but looking like Freddy Krueger).*snip* no explanation ...on how he survived or got onboard the Icarus 2."
Several reviews seem to have this. Again, the answer is there, and painfully simple, people are just overlooking it. The answer to why he's turned nutso and is all burnt is also there, in watching another character from the 2nd mission, early in the movie.

"5) Big fight between hero and captain Krueger. Not sure if anyone wins. ...and whatever happens to Krueger, no one knows. "

Fully agree here. The last minute of that fight was not done well, and is confusing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even with the Occasional Mistep, One of the Best of TV, 7 Aug. 2007
Moffat is at the top of his writing game, and Nesbit is absolutely fantastic as both Jackman and Hyde...the latter performance being instantly iconic.
Gina Bellman's character seems annoying at first, but by the middle of the series, when you see the character actually dealing with the stress and in flashbacks, she becomes just as important and fun as Nebitt...especially when they get to play off of each other.
Even the music is exceedingly well done in this series.

On a side note regarding another review, Hyde isn't Love...consider the source of that comment. Just because a character says something, does not make it true.

5.0 out of 5 stars How quickly people turn on Davies, 31 May 2006
I'm trying to figure out the hate for the man who's at the core of this great series...even the worst written episode of the Eccleston and Tennant runs is much better than most things available in the US or UK...and that episode wasn't written by Davies.

While this review is only written halfway through Tennant's first run as the Doctor, the series continues to be fantastic. Tennant has managed to top Eccleston (which is no easy task), and Billie Piper has some excellent moments (especially playing dual roles in New Earth)...although Rose isn't written nearly as well in the middle episodes. We get some great villians (sadly, Tony Head was not The Master....here's hoping his character isn't dead), a fantastic reimaging of the Cybermen, and a damn good werewolf for a TV show.

There's even an unintentional drinking game...every time Torchwood is mentioned, take a drink.

We're in good hands with Tennant, Piper, and the entire crew, from writers to production.

Yes, even Russell T. Davies.
