This is a series of abstracts from the records of the inquisition in the investigation of the Cathar heresy in the Pyrenees on what is now the French/Spanish border. Cathars believed in a direct relationship between the individual and god, and were therefore not popular with the established catholic church which sought to mediate that relationship. In fact this series of accounts of family relationships and feuds, clandestine worship and rural life seems to suggest that the Cathar beliefs were well suited to the rugged, bloody-minded isolated rural communities where they thrived. The account of Montaillou gives some insight into this way of life, and although some of the family relationships are a bit hard to follow, it can be a bit like village gossip about someone's niece who marries the brother of X the shepherd in the next village, the overall picture of rural life over seven hundred years ago is fascinating.

This book exposes the complexity of biological processes with care and detail but also a lightness of touch which makes it very approachable. It also addresses one of the more complex organs of the body and recounts many of the changing functions of the breast over time and through major events like pregnancy. This is important stuff, much of which is relatively new science and it is areal pleasure to have access to it in such a lucid form. It is also quite thought provoking. I still wonder if our whole reproductive and baby feeding system has been developed to allow the continuing life of our stomach bacteria so that their colonies can survive our deaths as their hosts.

This simple tool is a real help to ageing arthritic hands, although it takes a bit of getting used to. It will help with opening most screw-top items up to about 6 inches / 15 cms diameter and assist in turning difficult controls. (my 92 year old mother-in-law uses one to turn her shower control.) It has no moving parts and is made of soft/smooth material so will not cause harm it is slips. Keep one in the house.

5.0 out of 5 stars clever and funny, 21 May 2014

In the English eccentric tradition from the stable of Wallace and grommet these are animations of real life recorded dialogue. The animal characters avoid being cute, only just ,and sometimes become sharp representations of our own failures and conceits. The selected dialogue is sometimes hilarious and sometimes wistful, really cleverly put together. It is almost an animated version of Alan Bennett's Talking Heads, and equally endearing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun read of a specific genre, 21 May 2014

I read this as a result of seeing Leonard's obit. and realising I knew nothing of him. It is typical American cop/detective writing, tightly organised and plotted with lovely set pieces and an unusual sense of irony. The characterisation is slick rather than rich, the dialogue sparkles and the whole thing is a great light read. I shall try a few more of his considerable output.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting insight to a hidden state, 21 May 2014

The problem with accounts of this type, essentially by escapees from the country, is that they are by self selected opponents and by people who because of their situation have been unable to develop an explanatory account of what has happened to them. However as a testament to the trials of the mass of the population this is as well researched as possible and well marshalled. Often the little asides are what make the oppressive nature of the lives so grim, and by allowing free range to the accounts we do get a sense of the quality of life and its harshness. A useful insight.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy and easy to mount., 21 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The rack seems to be well made, is easy to fix and has a strong magnetic hold. Although it looks to be flat the blades are held on the upper and lower edges rather than the flat surface. This means that they are fairly easy to lift off, but also that there is a lip which may collet kitchen dirt. If it lasts over time it will be five star.

The Epigenetics Revolution: How Modern Biology is Rewriting our Understanding of Genetics, Disease and Inheritance

4.0 out of 5 stars cutting edge science for the lay reader, 4 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Carey sets out explain the molecular chemistry behind new insights of epigenetics and their implications. This is not easy reading but repays the effort. The only drawback is that the need to refer back to previous sections makes it tricky on kindle. However for anyone interested in the forefront of cell biology this is a must red in whatever format.

5.0 out of 5 stars slick analogue phone, 4 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you have to keep an old-fashioned analogue in case of power failure but want something modern this will fit the bill. It is in a classically modernist style and beautifully balanced in the hand. The support stand is clever and the fact that it will hang securely on the dialling base makes it one of the few which will wall-hang.

My wife loves this collection which really is a series of classic pop anthems from the last 30 years or so . Pretty good sound for even the older recordings.
