Price: £4.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Will read many times..., 28 Mar. 2017

While there is nothing startlingly new or surprising, it is nice to read a succinct and easy flowing book, on the subject of mental toughness.

Short and concise yet captures everything you need to know.

I will read this book many times again.

Spirit Of The Dancing Warrior: Asian Wisdom for Peak Performance in Athletics and Life
Spirit Of The Dancing Warrior: Asian Wisdom for Peak Performance in Athletics and Life

5.0 out of 5 stars My kinda book, 28 Feb. 2017

True Story: Lying on a beach in Goa I was watching hermit crabs and thinking how do they go about finding new homes? Finding another shell, getting the right size and actually moving into it when they are constantly being washed up and down the beach. Then picked up the book at next page and read 'Courage' and hermit crabs - spooky.

You could say this book is no more than 52 fluffed-up inspirational affirmations that blur a line between western and eastern philosophy. But this appealed to my personality and I loved it for it.

The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself
The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself
by Michael A. Singer
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.79

3.0 out of 5 stars A little self-centred, 28 Feb. 2017

The book reads like a western version of Thich Nhat Hanh who also can be repetitious in prose as is Singer but Hanh has a deeper wiser and less selfish wisdom. There is a wisdom in this book but I cannot help the feeling that it is more than a little self-centred.

4.0 out of 5 stars A stronger conclusion needed, 4 May 2016

Peter tries to break the taboo that the poor cannot pay for education as that would disqualify them from being called poor. He attempts to show that free schooling for all is a great idea but one that in reality is happening too slowly for those who need it the most. And it is these poor that find a way to pay for the children’s education.

I got Peters point way before he finished making it. I got it at the end of the first chapter, understood it fully by the end of the second and probably could recited the next few chapters without reading the text until he finished making his point – which was at least half way through the book. And then we piled into statistics; great stuff for the academic but not so good for the lay reader interested in the motivations, arguments and politics behind the findings.

It is ironic that Peter, in my view, takes the long route of telling this story. Maybe this is due to his frustration that his argument that poor people do pay for their children to be educated, as being dismissed, or from governments and NGOs wishing to take the long route to free education for all and leaving a legacy gap while this is organised.

I wish those who would rage against him could look closer at what he is saying; and those who through formal structures provide free schooling seek to understand how they could become better in their provision. I had hoped his conclusion would have been stronger.

The Great Game of Business: The Only Sensible Way to Run a Company
The Great Game of Business: The Only Sensible Way to Run a Company
by Jack Stack

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, 25 April 2016

When was the last time you knew that your frontline team could read the income statement and the balance sheet as well as you? When was the last time your frontline team knew that your business was off-plan, and what they could do about getting it back on plan? When was the last time you had a team meeting with your frontline staff and they gave you the numbers for the week that told you if you were on or off plan? Jack Stack suggests it should be every day or certainly weekly.

Stack illustrates his own companies fully open-book approach to business that calls for strong leadership, managerial daring and considerable stamina. Much of what is written appears to be teaching business managers ‘how-to-suck-eggs’, in that a great deal of the content prescribes fundamental business principles, yet holding this thought detracts from the reality of his business model. And while many business leaders might extol the principles of an open-book philosophy, the perseverance and staying power required to deliver, I suggest, would exhaust many a budding open-book advocate.

Throughout Stack demonstrates a business ethic that allows his frontline team to investment in their own success by benchmarking personal success as sufficient equity to purchase their own property. Everyone is a winner as stock price increases, margins are protected and efficiency encouraged. I would guess it is would be difficult to assess if a different, more autocratic management style would have brought about a higher stock price, but even if it did, I would like to think, the local communities economy would be more sustainable and at a higher level because of it.

Finding Triathlon : How Endurance Sports Explain the World
Finding Triathlon : How Endurance Sports Explain the World

3.0 out of 5 stars Finding Triathlon – spiritual materialism, 31 Mar. 2016

The cacophony of words hits you hard. Anecdotes and bizarre metaphors spit at you like a crazed staccato Machine Gun. The American West Coast cultural vernacular, alien to the British reader came as a shock, and made for a hard read - initially. And as a novice grey haired age-grouper not knowing who Scott is, before picking up the book, did not help.

Endurance and perseverance, perhaps part of the underlying premise of the book, ultimately delivered a reasonable read. The pedigree of this elite athlete, is unforced, yet shines through; as does the cultural education and scholarship which helps explain the syntax and context. Get through this and ultimately you have a confident prose that does not even hint at bragging nonetheless delivers authoritative power of achievement delivered by someone who knows and is comfortable with who he is and what he has done. He does not deliver a wrapped Zen answer to the books subheading but it is there if you can find it in the noise.

If nothing else I am grateful for finding spiritual materialism – now I do get that.

A wonderful book that reads more like the gentle wisdom of Pema Chordron or Thich Nhat Hanh on meditation or mindfulness yet envelopes you into the embrace of yoga by bringing a larger purpose and intention into our physical practice.
