5.0 out of 5 stars An illuminating intellect blazing at full power, 16 Jun. 2014

We are in the presence of one of those very rare intellectual giants who are able to make us stop, reflect, change course, attitude and if need be reject previous points of view.

Price: £18.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Lighting our way with a moral candle., 12 Mar. 2014

This review is from: Last Rites (Hardcover)
John Lukacs is not a historian of the kind common today.. He is a man of clear vision, impeccable prose and high moral standards onto which he grafts his immense reading of history. His "Democracy and Populism" and "At the End of an Age" will forever stand as the measure by which we assess our attitude to the constant assault of moral degradation, intellectual dishonesty and the moral cowardice of our age.

Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint - Arithmetic - Algebra - Analysis
by Felix Klein
Edition: Paperback
Price: £16.99

5.0 out of 5 stars An eternally valid classic, 12 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is fair to say that every first year university textbook after Professor Klein's little book was based on his. From Harvard to Moscow to Beijing and Tokyo this was the rock on which the mathematicians and engineers of the future were trained. Wonderful to see where it started.

5.0 out of 5 stars There is no better book about Hungarian cuisine in any language., 12 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
George was a cultured, polished genius of the culinary arts. His book is all embracing of a nation's culinary / cultural heritage. This is the work of the sublime professional, who knew and loved the food and the culture he was describing while his professionalism and levelheadedness has preserved for future generations what is (was?) best in my Mother's and Grandmother's kitchens.

The Price of Inequality
The Price of Inequality
by Joseph Stiglitz

5.0 out of 5 stars The Price of Inequality, 6 Sept. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Professor Stiglitz clearly illuminates the consequences of decades of neglect and woodoo economics on American society. Of the three pillars of American Democracy two have clearly failed to provide the opportunity for the young and the safety net for the old, which makes for a fair and balanced society. The situation is not hopeless, the country is still great and its people vigorous and hard working, but a way must be found, as Professor Stiglitz emphasizes,to return to sanity and the "middle way", as well as the morality of Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower.

5.0 out of 5 stars John Keegan: History of the Second World War, 17 Mar. 2011

This review is from: Second World War (Hardcover)
Military history is a near impossible subject. The writer needs to be well read in strategy, history, geography, culture, politics, economy and in the folklore of the countries of which he writes. If you don't have a mind like a dodecahedron Christal, which reflects light in twenty four directions all at the same time you'd better not attempt it.
John Keegan has the vision, the reading, the tranquility of mind, the sober vision necessary to see through the pain and individual sacrifice and to hold before our eyes the very essence of this huge - hopefully the last - conflict, which we Europeans have managed to inflict on ourselves.
Think!
1. The maniac Hitler has said fifteen years before he started the massacre, what he was going to do. We thought we could make a "compromise". We did: "Peace in our time."
2. Stalin has already massacred six million of his own people, before we discovered that he was our ally and our salvation and then supported him , while he massacred six million more.
3. Only by the miracle of the boys in Alamogordo could we stop the red horde not reaching the Atlantic shores in 1945.
We need John Keegan and his pupils to shake us by the scuff of our necks and help us create a vision in our hearts, free of cant, politics and the distortions of public relations, and help us see clearly for our own good and for the hope of our children.
