5.0 out of 5 stars Old Codger Strikes Gold ?, 14 Sept. 2008
This review is from: Sex & Gasoline (Audio CD)
First of all i'd like to state that i'm not really a Crowell fan , or at least i wasn't. As a fan of all things Country/Americana i'd obviously heard the name Rodney Crowell a lot but i hadn't really checked him out until now. I think i bought a compilation of his 80's stuff a while back but it couldn't have done much for me .
Swayed by 4 star reviws in Uncut and Mojo magazines i decided to give this effort a try and , jeez , am i glad .It really is a brilliant album , full of mellow , mature songs , superb lyrics and fantastic music.
Top production too by Joe Henry who duets with Rodney on the masterful track about (i think) his daughter , track 6 on the CD . I shall certainly be tracking back and buying some of his earlier albums now and i'm sure looking forward to it .Indeed i'll be checking out Joe Henry's last effort also . I'll be (pleasently) surprised if any are as good as this though . If you like later period Dylan , Neil Young or Springsteen then you'll love this ......

5.0 out of 5 stars Return of the Legend !, 6 Sept. 2008
This review is from: Meet Glen Campbell (Audio CD)
Like a few people i'm amazed that i even like Glen Campbell , i grew up on punk/new wave/indie in the 80's and stuff like this was totally naff right ? Ha , it's a funny old life isn't it .
Anyway , i don't just like Glen Campbell i bloody love the man and can recommend this new album to anyone , it's fantastic . The sound definetly echoes past glories but that's fine , they were superb recordings and still stand up well these days .
As a bloke who adores the Johnny Cash "Rick Rubin" albums i must be honest and say that it would be brilliant to hear Glen do a "stripped down" record next , a chance to really hear the still amazing voice of his without the strings etc getting in the way . Still , this is a superb record in it's own right .
Never , ever thought i'd live to hear Glen Campbell sing The Replacements though , like i said , it's a funny old life .
Other Glen Campbell Releases You Should Own include :
The Capitol Years (double CD with all the hits and a few little gems)
Reunion (superb early 70's album with Jimmy Webb )
Rhinestone Cowboy / Bloodline (2 for 1 CD of mid 70's glory)

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius !, 6 Sept. 2008
What's not to like about ole Harry Nilsson . Perfect songs filled with beauty and melody and timeless wonder , he was absolutely amazing in his day and this compilation includes pretty much all of his best work . Well , maybe not cos after getting into him you'll want to get his first 4 or 5 albums (at least) . Still , thats a good thing isn't it ? Who doesn't need more beauty and music in their life ?
If you've got old Nilsson stuff and want to upgrade or if you're just getting into him , buy this .
Also , if you're a Beatles fan you can't go wrong here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost Masterpiece, 18 Aug. 2008
This review is from: California (Audio CD)
I can only agree (wholeheartedly) with all the other reviewers - this album is an absolute classic and it's criminal really that it has not been re-released , especially when you hear some of the dross that has been . Beautiful , poetic , majestic in its slow burning power - one of the best records EVER released . Someone should sort it out .....

5.0 out of 5 stars A little gem, 17 July 2008
Have to be honest and admit that the first time i watched this film i got to the end and thought ... is that it ? I'd read great reviews when it came out and was really looking forward to seeing it then was pretty let down . I tucked it away for a while (18 months or so) then came across it 2 days ago , decided to give it one last try before donating it to the local charity shop and......wow . How did i miss it first time round ? This film is really beautiful and sad and insightful and..just totally bloody fantastic . I love it to death now and even watched it 2 nights in a row , the second time with the director/actors commentary , something i NEVER do . But thats how much i love it . Superb little gem of a film which i will treasure for a while yet .

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius, 21 April 2008
What can you say about Mike Leigh that hasn't already been said ?
Sod all thats what !
Suffice to say he's the greatest living British director (only Ken Loach comes close) and all his greatest works are here. I'd already seen most of the films but time has dimmed the memories so i'm looking forward to rediscovering some classic stuff . I am , however , familiar with the three absolute masterpieces which are : Career Girls , Secrets & Lies and All Or Nothing , every one of which is beautiful and heartbreaking in its own subtle way . Worth the money for those three films alone .
PS Mike's newest , Happy - Go - Lucky is a good film in it's own right but does not approach the genius of his greatest work . Maybe a bit unfair to compare it to those but he set the bar really high so has himself to blame !

Pedants Corner :
Although i have to agree with the previous (Mr Arthur Dooley) on the genius of this superb album , i would like to point out that as a matter of fact/point of interest etc , etc the passing scally waif that he mentions was not that at all but was in fact Ian Durys son , Baxter , himself now a recording artist in his own right , i thank you most kindly , Good Evening i'm from Essex.........

5.0 out of 5 stars I was drawn to this...., 20 Mar. 2008
I was drawn to this album by the wonderful title , being a big fan of beautiful , acoustic music which can evoke the rush of summer within your soul . And believe me i most certainly was not disappointed .
It comes across as a perfect summing up of childhood , summer holidays , first love ,broken hearts , friendships , drinking .... all of it mixed into a perfect little package of heartfelt glorious musical genius .
A little lost gem which you'll go back to again and again .
Recommended if you love :
Shack
The Lilac Time
XTC (Skylarking , Apple Venus )
The Pearlfishers
What are you waiting for ?

5.0 out of 5 stars Bleak but brilliant !, 16 Feb. 2008
This review is from: Northline (Paperback)
Second effort from Willy and it was well worth the wait . A heartbreaking (at times) tale which had me feeling a bit down , a bit upset at some of the things Allison has to go through .Still , its a look at real life and all its pitiful truths . Ultimately there's a sense of redemption and hope in the air . Superb effort which i really loved and will go back to , thats for sure . And at the end i had a song going round in my head , not one by Willys excellent band but one from American Music Clubs classic album "California" called "Western Sky" which goes :
I hate to see you look that way
All the beauty has left your face
Such an easy thing to throw away
But its impossible to replace
It just seemed to fit in with the book somehow , i wonder if Willys heard that album cos i know he'd love it .

PS with early copies there's a superb CD Soundtrack To THe Novel which is really good , laid back country/noir type instrumentals , like ambient Americana . So hurry !

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Class, 19 Jan. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'm a massive Dylan fan but i'm also a thoroughly modern guy so i approached this release with a fair amount of trepidation , after all , those old recordings and songs are all a bit naff and poorly produced aren't they . Well , i could not have been more wrong and i'm so glad i took a chance on this because it is absolutely superb . I'm having a fantastic time discovering a lost world of superb music that i was so wrong to dismiss , almost every song on here is absolutely amazing .
The presentation and packaging are brilliant too and i shall certainly be checking out more releases from Chrome Dreams , they've done a great job here . Can't recommend this release highly enough .
