5.0 out of 5 stars Truth and Beauty, 8 Aug. 2009

Tony Bennett / Bill Evans remains one of the greatest albums ever released and it's a joy to see it finally getting the re-issue treatment it so richly deserves .
You also get the pairs second release (Together Again) and a full disc of alternate takes but , for me , the real stuff comes from that original classic ( Disc 1 tracks 1-9 of this release.)
What i love about it most is getting to hear Tonys voice in that stripped down , late-night setting , so rich , powerful and full of emotion. These are some of the very best tracks he's ever put out and are a joy to listen to , time and time again .
In a review of an earlier version of this album i had to confess that i knew little about his sparring partner here , Bill Evans , however this new release also comes with an absolutely perfect 18 page essay by Will Friedwald which has gone some way to addressing that situation . Very informative and helping me appreciate this sublime music even more , it was almost worth the money just for the sleevenotes and photos , i had always wanted to know more about this album , now i do ! It was especially good to read about Bills last phone call to Tony when he told him to forget all the other stuff and focus on "the truth and the beauty " , well they certainly had done that very thing 6 years earlier that's for sure.
A perfect re-issue both for newcomers and long term admirers , fresh perspective on an all time legendary album .
Great work by all concerned .

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last, 11 July 2009
Finally , a much anticipated and long overdue compilation from one of the greatest bands of the last 20 years . And it is , as expected , quite superb.
The single disc version is a straight forward 20 track romp through the best of the bands output (everyone will moan about omissions but that's inevitable)in chronological order . OK for us long term fans but nothing new . Newcomers will surely be amazed at how a band so superb could have passed them by before , you're in for a real treat .
The real good stuff comes on Disc 2 which is available in the "Deluxe Edition" along with a DVD , it is simply amazing , filled with another 20 tracks 14 of which are previousy unreleased . Quite simply , its a must buy . Bsides and off-cuts ? ....its better than most "real" albums that will be put out this year !
Die -hard Jayhawks fans , this is most definetly worth your money , you know what to do...........

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloody Hell !!!, 2 Dec. 2008
This review is from: THE DUST (Audio CD)
I read about this CD in Mojo magazine where it was awarded Blues Album Of The Month for December 08 . Must admit i was a bit wary because i love all types of American music from blues to country through to soul etc but i never feel that anyone can do it as well as the Americans . I took a chance on this anyway's good . Very , very good. In fact it's bloody magnificent and i can't stop playing it all the time !
Superb acoustic stuff all the way with top-notch musicianship , great songs (covers and brilliant originals) and some of the best , most passionate vocals you'll hear in a long time . I've been converted , this guy's as good as any American out there and , Ian , this is a damn masterpiece my man . More please......

5.0 out of 5 stars A beauty, 26 Nov. 2008
This review is from: Gossip in the Grain (Audio CD)
What an absolutely magnificent release this is.From the soulful, upbeat strut of the opener "You Are The Best Thing" all the way to the hushed beauty of the title track which closes proceedings , Ray and his cohorts simply never put a foot wrong. It is ,i believe, a modern classic and a firm contender for Album Of The Year .
I came to this release with no knowledge of this guy's previous work , i'd heard his name and read about him but never got around to checking out his music. I cannot therefore tell you how this new work compares to previous releases , what i can tell you , without doubt , is that this is a CD i've been playing constantly for the past 3 or 4 weeks now and i've never got bored yet , in fact it just seems to get better every time i play the damn thing !
Maybe that's because these songs do not , for the most part ,hit you instantly.Instead they just sort of creep up on you unawares and work their way , subtly, under your skin .They just keep dragging you back and before you realise , you're hooked.
At the moment my very favourite has to be the achingly beautiful "Winter Birds" but i think every track on here has been my fave at some point , that's how good it is.
I haven't dwelt to much here on the merits of individual songs but that's because i feel that the overall quality is such that it's a work which should be heard in it's entirety.Lots of times in fact .
If you like magnificent, heartfelt music and songs sung with real passion and emotion then you simply must get this . It's superb .
Right , time to order his first two albums now i suppose.........

5.0 out of 5 stars It's About Time !, 24 Nov. 2008
This review is from: Ready for the Flood (Audio CD)
What a treat it is to have these two fellas recording together again . It's been a while since The Jayhawks'"Tomorrow The Green Grass" but here they pick up right where they left off with a sublime record , drenched in acoustic guitars , perfect harmonies and some very fine songs .It's hard to pick highlights out at the moment as i've only played it 3/4 times so far but that's enough to tell that the overall quality is superb and that this will become a firm favourite.
I purchased this CD at Oran Mor in Glasgow just last night , where i was lucky enough to witness an utterly fantastic live show by Mark and Gary . I hadn't seen them together since a Jayhawks show in King Tuts Wah Wah Hut in about '94 but it was easy to tell that they've simply gotten better over the years , superb musicianship combined with easy going banter with the crowd made for one of the greatest shows i've been to in many a year (and i go to a few !)
Mixing old faves with new songs (which were easily on a par with the oldies) they turned in a fantastic 90 minutes of music which the capacity crowd lapped up . I for one loved every minute of it , truly excellent music by two of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet . If you're fortunate enough to see them on the rest of this tour be sure to stick around after the show and they well may come out and have a chat and sign the new CD for you .
Anyway , fantastic night . Thanks for coming to Glasgow fellas and , please, don't leave it so long until the next time !

This is a weird , strange and magical release which seems to come from some deep and dark place in Berts soul . Absolutely impossible to get a true handle on this , its been fascinating and beguiling me for ages.
An absolute classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Single Ever Released !, 18 Oct. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Goldwax Story Vol.1 (Audio CD)
As far as i am aware , this is currently the only CD release of the single which i personally consider the best that's ever been released . And i'm talking about any style and any era of music you care to mention . And in 30 years of being an avid music fan , i believe i've heard the best of them all .
The song i'm talking about sits proudly on this fine compilation at track number 5 : That's How Strong My Love Is by O.V. Wright .
The story of O.V. Wright is a long and interesting one but i don't have the time to get into it now . Suffice to say that the man was a superb singer , deeply rooted in the Gospel tradition which dominates Southern soul . Stax Records had the chance to sign him (and this song) but passed and the world is surely a poorer place for that decision , how much joy and pleasure this mans voice could have given us if he'd become a bigger star than he did .
If you have any feeling at all for soul (or beautiful heartfelt music of any kind) then please buy this disc and learn to appreciate the glory and majesty of O.V. Wright a criminally underrated singer .
Oh and i should also add that this disc also contains magnificent performances by such fantastic singers as The Ovations , Wee Willie Walker , Spencer Wiggins and the absolutely incomparable , legendary James Carr . Buy all his CD's Next !!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Compilation Ever Released ?, 16 Oct. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
First thing i have to say is that this release is truly perfect , a work of art,in fact, that is worth every penny .And i'm not even talking about the music yet !
From the evocative photo which adorns the front cover (taken at a Stax session in the 60's) , to the colours , typography and design of the track listing on the back and the extensive hard-back booklet with tons of info and facts on all the artists and songs it is so obvious that lots of care, attention and hard work has gone into this release by everyone concerned , it's a real labour of love . Thank you.
And , of course , there's the actual music itself .......
OK , i'm biased . Soul is my true love when it comes to music and , specifically , soul of the Southern variety .I was pretty much certain to love most of the tracks on here but even i wasn't prepared for just how magnificent it all is .Even tracks i've become (overly) familiar with over the years seem to have taken on a new lease of life , old worn out classics have raised their game and got even better when placed alongside new (to me at any rate) slabs of mellow passionate genius . And that's what you get here , believe me , some of the greatest music ever recorded .
So . Packaging superb. Music even better .
Now the quibbles ! You knew they were coming didn't you , even the most perfect diamond has a flaw or two .In this case though they are minor and not really worth bothering about , i just thought i'd mention them anyway .Also they're personal so if you're thinking of buying this : DO IT ! Don't let my gripes put you off .
The first concerns my all time "greatest ever " song , by anyone , ever , in any genre . Namely "That's How Strong My Love Is" by the legendary O.V. Wright .A simply magnificent performance by all concerned and IT SHOULD BE ON HERE !
Secondly is "I'd Rather Go Blind " by Etta James .Yes , it's great but i for one am sick to death of it , seems like it's on every compilation i ever buy ! Overkill . I don't doubt that Etta should be on here (her Muscle Shoals work is class) but there's lots to choose from and It Hurts Me So Much or Almost Persuaded are under heard tracks which deserved a chance.

Still , like i said , thats just me , it can't be allowed to put you off and i'm sure the compilers will take those points on board for Volume 2 which , people , just HAS to happen . I mean , after such a triumph as this release there just has to be a sequel , surely ? Just give us another 75 tracks from the same period , i'll be first in the queue !
Anyway , an absolute triumph from start to finish , an utter masterpiece and a work of inspired genius . I love it .
To everyone at Kent and Ace Records and especially to Tony Rounce and Dean Rudland i say , sincerely , thank you .
Some esteemed reviewers in the monthly music magazines (as well as me and my friends) are saying that this just may be the greatest compilation ever released (in ALL genres!) and .....we're right !
Right , i simply must go and listen to "That's The Way Love Turned Out For Me" for the millionth time this week.........

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated, 11 Oct. 2008
This review is from: Del Amitri (Audio CD)
This album was being rated at only 3 and a half stars , criminal !!
For , simply , this is a 5 star album all the way , one of the best releases of the 80's and on a par with classics from The Smiths , Prefab Sprout and Orange Juice . If you like all those bands then you'll love this but , be warned , it's much diffrent from the bands later material .
Jangly guitars , heartfelt singing and superb lyrics dominate on one of the great lost little gems of the era , go on take a chance !

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughts on this beautiful music, 29 Sept. 2008
the velvet world
it's dawn or it's dusk
morning light or twilight
you're half asleep or is it half awake
no difference
bedroom walls gently changing colour
from pink
to orange
to red
and back again
wrapped in a dream of innocence
and nostalgia
half formed memories at the edge of consciousness

no i am not afraid of loving you

Yes i am aware that this wee thing wot i wrote was not exactly helpful (but thanks to those who voted for it !) but i was inspired and carried away with the beautiful and perfect music on the album . So i won't apologise . I'm still playing Save Your Light.......and i've had it a while so it must be good , buy in confidence !
