5.0 out of 5 stars Quality sound from stylish headphones., 11 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am very impressed with these stylish, lightweight headphones. They fit nicely on the ears, without being too tight and they don't slip out of place when on the move. The sound is very well balanced with rich full bass, well-defined mids (pushed slightly more forward than many headphones), and clear treble (not at all harsh or sibilant). You hear every instrument very clearly so they are great for music that has complexity and a range of instruments. Because of the prominent mids, they are perfect for vocal music. Up until recently I was using Dr Dre Solo HD beats, which I quite like (although I concede that they are not suitable for all types of music). I truly believe that these RHA headphones are superior to the beats (and they cost a third of the price!!!)

The Dream of Perpetual Motion
The Dream of Perpetual Motion
by Dexter Clarence Palmer
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your average steampunk novel, 13 Feb. 2013
This is not a typical steampunk novel. A lot of steampunk is plot driven and strongly focused on aspects of action and adventure. If this is the kind of thing you are looking for you will probably be disappointed with 'The Dream of Perpetual Motion'. If, however, you like the depth and beauty of great writing then you will love it. Here the steampunk and fantastical elements are used as a highly imaginative vehicle for delivering a narrative that has more in common with contemporary literary fiction than any sci fi genre. The style is very literary and impressionistic with shifting time frames, perspectives and narrative voices. The continual allusions to Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' are very clever, but if you don't know the play it won't spoil your enjoyment of this novel. This is definitely a novel that transcends the genre it is written in and is therefore not so much a great steampunk novel, but a great novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the great Costello albums, 22 Jan. 2013

This review is from: King Of America (Audio CD)
Definitely one of Costello's best albums. Costello has always been a lover of melody. He has said that the melodically strong Armed Forces album was a direct response to listening to the songs of Abba!. King of America is also very strong melodically, with excellent arrangements and some of his best lyrics. His singing is also a little less shouty than usual.

3.0 out of 5 stars Chick Lit for men, 22 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Scratch (Kindle Edition)
This book provides an entertaining read with a likeable first person narrative voice. There are some well written comic situations, but overall the will they, won't they narrative thread has been done many times before (in fact it is the staple feature of most chick lit novels). I didn't think that Paula's father was very convincing - a retired professional psychologist with a Bruce Lee fixation. Take out the swearing and the heavy drinking, and you are left with a good (but certainly not great) chick lit novel aimed at men (funnier but not that not dissimilar to the novels of Tony Parsons). Although I quite enjoyed the novel, it's not a genre that I would want to explore much further.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant, funny and inspirational, 8 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Brilliant biography of a true English eccentric. Hysterical anecdotes mix with heart-rending insights to produce one of the richest biographies I have ever read. After reading this I bought all of the Bonzo's albums as well as Stanshall's solo albums (a shame there are so few of these). You will be missing out if you don't read this!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not great out of the box, but after 20 hours burn in....., 29 Sept. 2012
I have read a lot of negative reviews about these 'beats' headphones, and despite initial reservations I took the plunge and bought a pair. The packaging is sublime and the phones look and feel fantastic. However, when I first listened to them I was disappointed: the bass was just too overwhelming and the mids were rendered muddy and soupy as a result. This was most noticeable on rock music where the vocals and guitars sounded a little like they were underwater. My first thought was 'Oh no, I wonder if I can return them?'

I have now been using them very regularly for a couple of weeks. They have 'burnt in' and the sound is much better - brilliant in fact. They have really 'opened up'. The bass is still full, but not at all overwhelming. The mids now are clear and well defined with vocals and guitar solos singing out perfectly. The treble is also crisp and detailed. In just two weeks my 'beats' have become a different pair of headphones - they are astonishingly good.

So, if you get a pair, don't be too quick to judge. Give them a couple of weeks and allow the high quality sound to develop. It is well worth the perseverance.

I suspect that many of the bad reviews you can read on the internet were written after listening to the headphones straight out of the box. My beats solo HD headphones are by far the best headphones I have ever owned. Now I want to listen to my entire music collection all over again (about 2000 CDs) because the beats add another dimension to the music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great headphones, 19 Sept. 2012
At first I was a little disappointed with the sound quality of these headphones. On my iPod Classic the mid range frequencies sounded a little soupy and muddy. However, when I selected the treble booster setting on the equaliser, everything became clear. These headphones are significantly bass enhanced. This is great for rap and hip hop music but can be a bit overwhelming for rock music. All that is required is to choose the right EQ setting on your player and you are away. Now I hear great balance and depth of sound - far superior to any headphones I have used before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Attractive and practical case, 10 Jun. 2012
Love the feel of this case. Nice soft, padded cover which folds back to allow one handed reading. Some people (on other sites) have complained that the elastic is too loose to allow comfortable one-handed reading, but if you want, you can twist the elastic loop a couple of times before securing the folded back cover to make it tighter. The inside of the cover is a nice soft-touch, suede-like material which feels luxurious. Colour of the cover is nice and rich, complemented by the red elastic. The case is also very lightweight. Over this is a stylish and attractive case.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the price but...., 29 Dec. 2011

Nice retro style headphones with a great big bassy sound. However, if you try walking round with them on, you quickly become aware of the wind noise they create (the earcups are like aeolian harps!). I took my dog for a walk with these on whilst listening to my ipod, but found the whistling, howling wind noise intolerable - so never again.

If you want some fairly decent headphones (at a very decent price) to use in the house - then these are a great buy. If you want some headphones to use on the move then you need to look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best cover I have owned for the kindle., 29 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a fantastic cover. I have tried out several covers (previously for Kindle 3 and now for Kindle 4), but this one is by far the best and in my opinion is far superior to the official (and ridiculously overpriced) Amazon cover. This cover is only marginally bigger than the kindle,so unlike other covers it doesn't unnecessarily increase the size of the object you are holding (and let's face it, a major advantage of the kindle is its diminutive size). It is also very light, making it very comfortable to hold in any position for any length of time.

At first I was worried by the sticky pad onto which the kindle is placed. I thought it might leave a mark on the back of my kindle (like many dreaded price stickers) but this is not the case. The sticky pad holds the kindle in place very firmly, but you can remove your kindle from the cover unscathed fairly easily whenever you want and the stickiness stays on the pad and not the kindle.

The cover is not real leather but is a very good quality imitation. It looks great and has a very soft and luxurious feel to it. The inside is a soft grey suede-like fabric which also feels good quality. The stitching around the outside is perfect. It is fastened with an edged leather-like tab that has a magnet concealed within it - not a magnet press-stud. This makes the closing of the cover extremely simple. When reading, the cover folds right back and can be held in place by folding the closing-tab back.

Because the kindle is held in place by the gel pad there is nothing attached to the face or the sides of the kindle, giving total, unimpeded access to all of the buttons. This is what makes this cover so special. In fact (apart from the softness of the feel) you sometimes forget that your kindle is even in a cover. The Kindle 4 is a beautiful object and this very well-designed cover does not diminish that beauty in any way.

If you have bought a Kindle 4 and have not yet got a cover for it, then I would whole-heartedly recommend this one as the best on the market in terms of its form, function and value.
