Breathtaking stuff, 15 Feb. 2014
I would not have bought this, thinking it was just another Hollywood style jaunt, but I caught an episode on TV when abroad and was hooked. OK, the history has been a bit adjusted to help the story, but the look is so authentic and the dramatic pace is fast. Great acting all round, notably from Gabriel Byrne, but also from Travis Fimmel in the lead role who seems born for the role. Nice touches, such as the initial uses of Old Norse and Old English when characters first appear, the stories of the old gods interweaved into the story and the portrayal of society at that time give the series an educational value which cannot be overestimated. It's a bit bloody at times, so perhaps not for the little children, but for a middle- aged, amateur dark age history buff who likes a good story ( I.e. me!) this was perfect viewing for a dark, stormy winter's night. Top marks.
