An excellent collection surveying the development and range of a distinctly beautiful voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy listening, 14 Jan. 2013

Seen recommended in a magazine in Dentist's surgery. They were needed for listening to radio in bed. Somewhat odd looking earpieces are actually very comfortable with choice of pads and along with light but solid cables robust enough to withstand movement when falling asleep. In these circumstances I use only one piece for safety. Sound performance is very good. Radio voices and their characteristics are instantly recognisable: music (Classical orchestration and vocal) is of good quality. Well worth the dental visit!

2.0 out of 5 stars Its NOT the Whistling Gypsy, 12 Dec. 2012

My 78rpm from 1955 got cracked and I haven't found Rose Brennan's recording of 'The Whistling Gypsy' other than in this reference in Amazon. However to my bewilderment the other side of the record was downloaded i.e. 'If You Love Me', which is only made bearable by Rose's voice. It's probably the reward for teenage time spent listening to Joe Loss (and others)on the radio. Still, I cannot see this item making a fortune: I'm probably the only one to have bought it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Recapturing childhood, 21 Jan. 2008

This review is from: Chronicle In Stone (Paperback)
Kadare recreates the irrepressible wonderment and imagination of childhood. All the characters come alive, their traits seemingly emphasised by child-like observation and innocence. Unsophisticated routines of long sheltered traditions and community are shattered by war and foreign intervention but there is a timeless quality in the depiction of human foible and behaviour.
The introduction is informative. The translation reads well, suggesting a poetic quality in the original.

5.0 out of 5 stars More to Prussia than you thought!, 20 Jan. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Iron Kingdom is an extremely stimulating work. Thoughtful enquiry and taut analysis produce remarkable insight and conclusions. It is a work of causal relationships rather than events. The interactions of cultural, socio-economic, dynastic and constitutional tensions are clearly pointed within the shifting geographic patchwork of Brandenburg Prussia. The relative ebbs and flows of influences such as religion, enlightenment, militarism, political and national ideologies and the preferences of dominant personalities stand out, helping to explain why events took particular courses. So the emerging tragedy in post-1870 Imperial and Weimar Germany can be identified. The reader is given plenty to reflect on what might have been in Prussia.
All this has been achieved in a well written work. The language register is rigorous (at 70, I was occasionally driven to the dictionary) but there are quotable sentences and sources to savour. I feel revived by a refreshing example of historians' discipline.
