5.0 out of 5 stars A fine work!, 9 Jan. 2015
This review is from: A Northerly Land (Audio CD)
Purchased as a Xmas present, this album had been on my Wish List for some time. A most impressive collection of tracks spanning folk and contemporary music from a set of superb musicians, all brought together without losing sight of the initial aim of the project, to explore the traditions of Sutherland. A fine work! Ian Copeland has certainly repaid his sponsors with the production of this album!

Cradle of the Scots: An Argyll Anthology
Cradle of the Scots: An Argyll Anthology
by Brian D. Osborne
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A very different way of seeing Argyll, 21 Nov. 2014

I'd used the 'Look Inside' facility before buying this volume, and was curious. When reading it, I was intrigued. And on putting it down, I had the widest grin imaginable. What a fiendishly clever way to create an impression of a region, its people and their traditions!
The mix of fiction, non-fiction, some tales in an anecdotal style and the occasional poetry succeeds in bringing Argyll to life in a way that delights and endears. It has made a return visit to the West Cost even more imperative!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super stuff!, 3 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Couldn't put this book down once I'd started it. So different from the run-of-the-mail sailing log type of 'travel diaries'.
Anyone contemplating a serious voyage will already be a competent sailor and doesn't need to know when you switched the engine on or shook out a reef, but the psychological aspect of being alone at sea for a length of time would be something alien to most, and the author tells it like it is. Fears and anxieties, and how he lived with them, sometimes better than others, are openly talked about. Particularly struck by his arrival in the Caribbean after the long crossing, the noise, the people and he 'just wanted them all to go away!'
Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super map and super service!, 9 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Saw a copy of this old map in a hotel while on a short break, and had to find a good copy, as it showed places of particular personal interest. I was initially disappointed with a delay in delivery, but a personal call from the Director of the suppliers set my mind at rest. When it arrived, I was delighted. It's printed on a matt PVC material which has an weird velvety cloth-like feel, but which ensures it lies perfectly flat.
My copy is away being framed at the moment. Such a quality product deserved a quality frame, and it took some time to decide upon!
Very pleased with both the item and the service received!

5.0 out of 5 stars Explains it all so well!, 15 Jun. 2014

This review is from: VHF Afloat (Paperback)
I had a copy of this little handbook previously, and carelessly mislaid it! Bought another author's book to replace this, and was disappointed, so have now purchased Sara Hopkinson's guide again.
It runs through the whole subject in such a straightforward manner, with brilliantly simple graphics at every stage. The simple things like 'What do I say?' and 'in what order' and 'what should I do if ...' are all covered so well, I cannot imagine a better introduction to using VHF afloat!
Brilliant little book!

Scotland's Islands: A Special Kind of Freedom
Scotland's Islands: A Special Kind of Freedom

3.0 out of 5 stars In need of a good editor, 7 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an almost-brilliant book, but it falls short, not because of the content, but because of the publishing.
Richard Clubley writes of the islands with an obvious fondness, and it would have been a natural progression to compile his writings into one volume. But the publisher has failed to produce it in a format that gives the impression of one work! It comes over as a 'collection' of pieces, written at separate times, with little to bring them together. And the result is that, in some sections, there are separate chapters on the same island, quoting the same information over again - 'Hold on, I just read that a few pages back?'
So, good stuff, but could have been much better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Only five tracks?, 7 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Love Over Gold (Audio CD)
That was my response to a friend who recommended this album to me, after my purchase of new headphones - 'Especially the title track', she said!

But I never fail to accept good advice, and went ahead, so was suitably rewarded when I sat down to listen for the first time.

Dire Straits are so well known, I'm not going to attempt to add to their accolades, but to release a remastered CD of 'concert-length' recordings is a stroke of genius. Solid competent band with Knopfler's characteristic guitar take you through highs and lows, excitement and peacefulness, sometimes in the same number. a brilliant addition to my collection!

And, at the end, I hadn't noticed there were only five tracks!

Erchie and Jimmy Swan
Erchie and Jimmy Swan
by Neil Munro
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars More of the same - excellent!, 14 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Erchie and Jimmy Swan (Paperback)
Having discovered 'Erchie - my droll friend' fairly recently and chuckled from end to end of the volume, I was delighted to uncover some further adventures and mishaps, spread over the same period.
And then I was introduced to Mr Jimmy Swan, travelling representative for the company of Campbell and Macdonald, going about his calling the length and breadth of Scotland with his entourage of sample cases loaded onto the luggage car on platform 4. What a jump in social class, this is a professional gentleman, with his brushed hat, his top-coat and his range of tweeds, prints and voils with which he dictates to the country village women, just what the latest fashion is, at least until his next visit! The same whimsical style that endeared Para Handy and Erchie, carries Jimmy Swan Esq. into the list of legendary Scottish characters!

5.0 out of 5 stars To be used often, 28 Mar. 2014

There is a tendency to shy away from books by multi-Michelin-starred chefs, an expectancy that the contents will be over-complicated and fussy, but this cookbook from Marcus Wareing proved me wrong again. It is more an encouragement to do the simple things well. Full of straightforward everyday recipes with step-by-step pictorial guides, this will become a well-thumbed volume over the next few years. Recipes like Beef Hotpot, Sausages and Onion Gravy and Mum's Pork Chops are far from what I consider 'cheffy', And all the better for it!
