5.0 out of 5 stars After seeing Moriyama's retrospective at Tate Modern, 24 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Tales of Tono (Paperback)
It's a small book (published by Tate) containing plenty of dark contrasty photos which may not be to everyone's not expect to see fine tonal veriations and details in his black and whites. They do come from a very different aesthetics, an aesthetic much more to do with emotional expression and a working out of ideas. The layout is very much in accordance with how Moriyama wanted the book to look, an important factor since he usually takes photos with a book in mind.

I am very glad I chose this book among several others, as it turns out it is one that is very close to Moriyama's heart and reading about the background and what Moryama says about this project is revealing and absolutely fascinating. I now want to read the original Tales of Toro.

I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in the history of photography or in Japanese photography. It will become a classic, if it isn't one already.

4.0 out of 5 stars charming and challenging, 26 July 2010
A great little introduction to this photographer's work. Although taken many decades ago, these images surprise given their unorthodox and contemporary sensibility. The images are of a photographer who approaches the medium with a painter's eye for colour and layered texture. Kozloff's introduction is a marvellous piece of perceptive writing. If you already have a work by Leiter, t is worth getting this one just for that illuminating text.

5.0 out of 5 stars photography for all your senses, 26 July 2010
This review is from: East to East (Hardcover)
A beautifully produced book showing off the black and white photographs in high quality reproduction.
The photographs are lushly dark, full of surprises, resonating with mood and felt experiences. They take you on a journey across a vast little known continent through the eyes of someone who sees with his heart and soul. This award-winning photographer appreciates and artfully transforms the reality he encounters into images that are exquisitely composed. This book will provide me with many hours of pleasure in years to come. Timeless.

5.0 out of 5 stars HP Satin photopaper, 16 Aug. 2009
I was a bit wary about this paper since I had not used it before, and even when I first saw it felt rather sceptical. However I have been very pleasantly surprised. The photos look fabulous. Just the right level of lustre without shouting out loud. A sophisticated product that will appeal to photographers who want their prints to look their best on the exhibition wall.
