5.0 out of 5 stars Friendship and loyalty, 25 Jan. 2017
This review is from: The Woolworths Girls (Paperback)
Many people fondly remember Woolies, with its wood floors and polished counters, where you could buy almost anything from a jelly-baby to a light-bulb. Going behind the scenes to meet the people who lived and worked there makes for a warm and intriguing story.
But 'The Woolworth's Girls' is not just an exercise in nostalgia. It's also about family and friendship, loyalty and bravery. The war-time setting is certainly in place, but it's the characters you can't help but remember long after the story comes to an end. My favourite has to be Ruby, the grandmother positively overflowing with goodwill and energy, who holds everything together. Any invading force would never have stood a chance!
Looking forward to 'The Butlin's Girls', coming soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars From two writers to a wide range of readers..., 13 Dec. 2016

A useful and very well set out piece of writers' equipment! I especially liked the 'speech bubble' headings, directing the eye to important points.
Best features, according to an Oldie? Well, that would be a) the good-sized print and b) some informative words about how to navigate Twitter et al. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a Christmas tale..., 13 Dec. 2016

This review is from: The Christmas Promise (Paperback)
This is a great read, and the sort of fiction Sue Moorcroft does so consistently well. At its heart is an old-fashioned yet very modern romance... but of course that's not all there is to it. I loved the way the many background characters are portrayed. They weave their way in and out of Ava and Sam's story, from dear but misled Izz to brave and wilful Wendy, without losing you as the reader. You will be certain to remember them for a long time afterwards.

All is well at the end, naturally, but not until we've learned a great deal along the way. And not only about lovely hats made of sinamay (yes, I enjoyed looking up to see what on earth that was!), but also great dads, flawed but sympathetic heroes, and one truly horrible ex-boyfriend.

Very nice to meet Ratty again, too!

An involving read. The characters take you with them. Blake and his wife most of all intrigue and encourage the reader to discover more. There is a kindness at the heart of this story that (for me, at any rate) overcame initial problems with some of the words appearing in dialect. There is also a lot about conflicts that arise when an outsider comes to live nearby that resonates in modern life. Value-added storytelling!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read!, 7 Sept. 2014

A lovely read! Polly is an endearing and sympathetic character, and I found myself cheering her on right to the end of the story. The setting is excellent (even if Polly herself has to overcome her struggles with being afloat) with all the atmosphere and drama of events taking place beside the sea. There's lots of colour and some memorable secondary characters to enjoy, too. Recommended reading, especially if you like problems overcome and a satisfactory happy ending!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just right for a good read!, 7 Sept. 2014

This book has everything - wonderful characters, a heat-soaked setting, boats, drama, an endearing small boy and villains who make you wonder what the world is coming to. Everything... but crucially not too much of anything... makes this story flow really well. It's altogether a most enjoyable read, thoroughly recommended. (And I appreciate now being able to pronounce Ta' Xbiex, should anyone ask!)

That cover is certainly eye-catching! And the story inside doesn't disappoint. It keeps you wondering, and sympathetic to the characters all the way to the end.

Good fun - and some solid sense too! All those things we know we ought to do to keep fit not fat don't seem such an uphill struggle after reading it.
