5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Theft in History!, 21 Aug. 2009
The Rape of Europa [DVD]

The Rape of Europa is an exceptionable film containing a mix of extraordinary archival footage with narration by Joan Allen and interviews with various art historians and others. Well over ninety-percent of the photographic imagery and historical background content was absolutely new to me. This is a film everyone should view and own in for their personal or family collection. I recommend every educator to purchase a copy for their classroom, and every librarian purchase a copy for their institution.

This is an amazing account of a little known aspect of Hitler's ambition during the Second World War. It's a MUST for every history buff or art historian! Incredible, amazing, unforgettable. Raises numerous unanswerable questions. To what extent did Hitler's actions stem from his rejection by the Vienna Art Academy? The film also introduces the unsung heroes -- the Monuments Men. I just saw Robert Edsel on BBC discussing his new book about these Allied Soldiers who rescued and returned millions of items stolen during WWII. I have also ordered his book, the Monuments Men.

Rescuing Da Vinci

I saw Mr. Edsel on a BBC Segment and immediately ordered this book and his new book Monuments Men. It is hard to imagine why such an extraordinary story about a group of such extraordinary men and women has not been told until now. Congratulations to Mr. Edsel for finally writing about the "greatest untold story of WWII" and for bringing attention to these heroes of civilization. The world owes much to them for risking their lives to save so many of our most precious cultural treasures. In one word, this story is remarkable and this book should be a must own for every school library, military base, and politician as a reminder of the legacy of the Monuments Men and of the importance of protecting culture in times of conflict.
