This is a tantalising book, with translations of the final sections of poems/songs sung in the medieval Jewish tradition of Spain. They are lively and make me want to have more, the whole songs.
But this is a book for academia, with careful explanations of each section, no doubt very valuable for scholars, but for me, I would just want to read the songs/poems in full

3.0 out of 5 stars Rose lovers - this is for YOU, 18 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For someone with a passion for roses, this score is too low, but for someone who does not really care about the biology and classifications, there are many pages that I skipped, knowing that these were a vital work of love for the author who wants us to know about the history of a rose associated with his family. The story of the family and the author's search kept my attention for a while, as the prose style is easy to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The real story of a Willie McBride, 18 April 2016

It is well written in simple, clear prose, this tale of a man's search for the brother who died before he was born. His search brings him into contact with others who know the brother and in particular with girl in a rare photo of the brother at his prom dance, enabling him to know the dead man and mourn his loss and the loss of the person he might have been, in a low key but very touching telling of the quest and what he finds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Attwood, 17 Nov. 2015

Margaret Arrwood has done it again, turned out elegant and precise prose that conjures up lives and plots that are totally gripping and yet poking fun at a number of memes of our times. I enjoyed them all, and 'The Dead Hand that Loves You' was my favourite, telling a great story and also sending up the literary world and the appearances required to sell books. The title story tackles cruises - but just get this book and enjoy them for yourself.

The Photographer's Wife
The Photographer's Wife

4.0 out of 5 stars The long shadow of a husband and father, 17 Nov. 2015

I very much liked this story which has two women, mother and daughter at its centre. The tale is of the mother who grew up in the blitz in London to become the wife of a young man who becomes a famous press photographer is interleaved with the tale of one of their children, a daughter who has become a photographer also
The tale advances around the creation of a retrospective showing of the long dead photographer and has many twists and turns. The central characters come alive in the story. Anyone who thinks that the feminist movement of the 70s was a lot of fuss about nothing important would learn a bit from the relationship between the photographer and his wife.
I thought that there was a bit too much chopping from one story to the other - I would have preferred if there were longer sections in the lives of mother and daughter respectively. That said, I enjoyed this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars South Carolina as we might have wished it was...., 17 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There is a great deal of charm in this book, and the struggle of a teenage girl to come to terms with her life will appeal to many, but I found the book overlong and the social set up, so well drawn in general terms, was not credible at individual/family level for the main characters and drivers of the plot.
We are in South Carolina in the 60s as the civil rights bill goes through. The town our heroine flees to with her nanny is remarkably incurious about what a white child might be doing in the house of (even a well established) black family, although her presence in known from her first arrivaand. Surely the busybodies of the town, and/or male vigilantes would have investigated much sooner than the police - who are fobbed off with a child's story?

The Gondola Maker: A Novel of 16th-Century Venice
The Gondola Maker: A Novel of 16th-Century Venice

4.0 out of 5 stars Gondolas are not just boats...., 30 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very enjoyable tale filled with well crafted images of Venice and of the trades of Gondola making and of Gondoliers. If you like light historical fiction this will appeal to you, for even though the plot has aspects that are not credible, it has a charm and an internal logic that appears to work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Society is not always what it seems, 10 Oct. 2015

This review is from: The Foundling Boy (Kindle Edition)
Marcel Deon is a very well known and prolific French author. This novel, one of two volumes, sets out to tell the story of a foundling and his adoptive family. It is a coming of age story of a young man, and also his perspective on life as he encounters it also paints a perceptive if at times hilariously exaggerated picture of a segment French society and culture of the 1930s. A bit overlong, the denoument was obvious to this reader for some time before it was revealed. I will read the sequel and recomment this for a light read.
