5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent crime novel, 6 Oct. 2015
I didn't take to well to the first in this series (too much climbing expertise) but I'm glad I stuck with these books. Swansong is beautifully written and paced, and I've really enjoyed it. More in the pipeline, I hope!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, 25 Sept. 2015

This review is from: Emma (Kindle Edition)
This is a delightful retelling of the Jane Austen classic. The wry humour is there along with the sharpness of intuition of the various characters. Mr McCall-Smith has fulfilled goods task of modernising "Emma" beautifully while retaining the flavour of the original.

4.0 out of 5 stars Geographically this tired me, 13 Sept. 2015

I love these Liz Carlyle books, but this one had so many changes of location that at times I felt quite tired out. Otherwise the story was well up to standard and a very engaging read, with good principal characters. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars This has a powerful message, 8 Sept. 2015

The story telling is first class as usual, but the book's main merit is as a powerful polemic against the death penalty - especially as practised in Texas. Thought provoking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, superb characterisation, 21 Aug. 2015

I've has a few 2, 3 or 4 stars to review recently, so it's a pleasure to give an unhesitating 5 stars here. The semi-fictional location allied to a group of well drawn characters made this a pleasure to read, almost in one sitting. Bravo!

The Quick and the Dead (A Sister Agnes Mystery Book 3)

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite engrossing, 21 Aug. 2015

For me, this book was a little on the long side and could have done with a bit of editing. The story, however, is good, and the characters (mostly off the wall) are quite engaging. Well worth a read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Over much detail about climbing, 19 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The basic story is passable, but the characters are wooden and not sufficiently fleshed out to make them interesting. The climbing detail was, for me, tedious.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent story, but ..., 16 Aug. 2015

Let down by shoddy proof reading, but the writing is fairly pedestrian also. I would give this a qualified recommendation - just slightly better than OK.

Crow Hollow

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent period piece, 24 July 2015
This review is from: Crow Hollow (Kindle Edition)
The writer seems to have real understanding of this period of history, and the characters are mostly well drawn and believable. If, like me, you choose to gamble on a read away from your normal zone, this book will reward you

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced and attention-holding, 18 July 2015

Tried this author on spec, and got a pleasant surprise. The book is gripping from the very beginning, and doesn't sag at all. Very satisfactory!
