Art in Renaissance Italy 1350-1500 (Oxford History of Art)
Art in Renaissance Italy 1350-1500 (Oxford History of Art)
by Evelyn Welch

5.0 out of 5 stars a stimulating read, and E Welch doesn't disappoint, 25 Aug. 2012
a truly interesting book on Renaissance art, considering the subject from a variety of interesting, quirky angles and providing a very multi-facetted, rich perspective of the period. I particularly enjoyed how Evelyn related the materials and themes used in the arts to the respective social, geographical and cultural contexts of the artists and their patrons.

the book is well thought through, and offers a non-traditional view on italian renaissance art for those who have some basic knowledge of the renaissance (but is easy enough to follow and understand for those who don't). i imagine it is an excellent source for students working on related assignments, theses and presentations.

the book was a present from a friend of mine, and I have re-read it four times in the last two years

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVING this book, 25 Aug. 2012

an absolutely amazing book that covers a number of interdisciplinary humanities areas, from history to the arts to science etc of the renaissance. the imagery is amazing, and although the book is enormous in terms of its size, it is really well structured, easy to follow, and engaging throughout. it reviews the renaissance from many different perspectives and provides an excellent contextual understanding of this exciting period. i loved the unusual chapters on the development of maps, on emerging collections of coins and books and other quirky parts of the book, which are normally not included in such a book

4.0 out of 5 stars great imagery, 25 Aug. 2012

This review is from: The Art of Benin (Hardcover)
great imagery, but the narrative is sometimes confusing although very insightful. the book provides a very brief overview of the art of Benin, and is a good introductory read, but I wish it had more contextual detail, otherwise it almost feels like a great quality catalogue. i would still buy it as it provides a good overview of the art of Benin, and helped me writing my essay on the subject

Powerful Marketing On A Shoestring Budget: For Small Businesses
Powerful Marketing On A Shoestring Budget: For Small Businesses
by Dee Blick
Edition: Paperback
Price: £13.95

5.0 out of 5 stars a great book full of practical, realistic advice, 25 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
this book is targeting small businesses mainly, however, it is an excellent source for any B2B business as well, and many examples and ideas are well suited for medium size businesses in many industries.

The book is different from the book above in that its chapters focus on different aspects of marketing, and therefore these two books are in a way complementary. The only overlaps are Sales Letters, PR, and E-markeitng chapters (although the e-marketing part of it is slightly out of date now).

The highlights:

- Cold calling really well explained, and I must admit gave me the confidence to use cold calling for my business, which I would never have done before I read this book;

- Business networking presented in a great detail, which really helps you to focus and be selective, to make business networking work for your business and boosting your career. Some examples of UK/London networks provided for those interested to try them out;

- Dee shows a good understanding of PR processes (I used to work in a PR agency, and in a trade magazine, therefore I know what I am talking about), and give a simple but effective advice on how to get your news published.

hope this helps!

5.0 out of 5 stars an amazing book for small and medium sized businesses, 25 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although the book title refers to small businesses only, the advice Dee provides can be equally applied to B2B businesses, as well as medium- and large businesses with a limited customer base, for example. Many chapters are applicable to any type of business, and are a great and easy read. I like the book because:

- It is well laid out and easy to follow. Plus you don't need to read all chapters consecutively, which means you can dive in and out as and when your have time, or choose the chapters that interest you most;

- Chapter 3 includes 12 sample sales letters for those who need some new ideas and want to see how similar businesses have tackled the copywriting technique;

- Chapter 4, Beyond The Brochure, provides some good ideas on "alternative" marketing activities, i.e. things that are effective but that many managers forget about when considering their standard marketing toolboxes of advertising and PR

- Chapter 6 talks about blogs, and business blogging, which many senior managers are quite anxious about nowadays. Two guests writers provide a useful insight into how to organise your business blogging

- Chapter 7 mentioned other social media such as LinkedIn etc - a brief overview, but nonetheless a very valuable one!

A Pair of Blue Eyes (Wordsworth Classics)
A Pair of Blue Eyes (Wordsworth Classics)
by Thomas Hardy
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Hardy doesn't cease to amaze me, 25 Aug. 2012

a great read for people who understand literature, and equally for those who are just looking for an interesting novel to read.

although some critics believe that, being one of the earlier Hardy works, it lacks his usual maturity and texture, I think it is beautifully written, and I really enjoyed it. it is a book you would love to read in small bits in the evenings before you go to bed, or on your holiday - a light, engaging, captivating read, - a nice and realistic story with interestingly developed characters that rests on Hardy' questioning of social institutions and models of the 19th century.

the only missing ingredient for me is Hardy's references to Wessex nature that he so skilfully used in his later works.
