Sophie's World
Sophie's World
Price: £5.99

4.0 out of 5 stars An engaging read, 30 Mar. 2016
This review is from: Sophie's World (Kindle Edition)
The story is compelling, very informative and with surprising developments. The technique of setting the scene for each individual enquiry provides some ingenious metaphors to enhance the explanations. There is much to recommend this novel - it is engaging and enjoyable.

The sizing guide which I used to inform my choice was misleading. The shirt is too big.

4.0 out of 5 stars Philly Magic, 9 Feb. 2013
An enjoyable immersion into the distinct sound of a city. Comparable to New Orleans R&B or Nashville C&W. The mellow sound of seventies dance music is showcased here with a full range of familiar and influential tracks. A number of Philly compilations are available, this may be the best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality drama, 7 Jan. 2013

I liked the stylish imagery of these episodes. The characters develop during the series and the lead character seems to possess sound moral values and a balanced judgement. He also resembles Sherlock Holmes when he eliminates the impossible and reveals the truth in a Sicilian society that often appears immoral.
There are not many episodes in this collection so I have awarded four stars on the basis that the value for money is satisfactory rather than excellent.
If you are learning Italian it is a nice resource to consolidate your conversational skills (although watch out, there is some Sicilian dialect).

I like the feel of these songs, they seem fresh and spontaneously crafted. It reminds me of The Old Magic by Nick Lowe or In A Bad Mood by Geraint Watkins.

4.0 out of 5 stars Office politics and personalities satirised, 5 Jan. 2012

This review is from: Monday Monday [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
An acutely observed satire of the characters found in a UK workplace that will be recognised by anyone that has had to work within a team. The humour is mostly gentle (with some slapstick and a few belly laughs) and benefits from some excellent characterisations from the cast. The writers should be commended as the story line of each episode is well crafted and believable. The actors are nearly all familiar which makes it all the more surprising that it passed me by when this series was shown on peak time television. Apparently it was not shown on TV until two years after being made.
Morven Christie is outstanding as the problem-solving unsung hero of the office and Fay Ripley creates a character that is inept, funny but evokes some sympathy too. Above all it is the accurate observation that rewards the viewer because we see people and situations that are common to us all. Watching these happy episodes will bring a smile to your face, it is a worthy purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant collection, 29 April 2009
This review is from: Quartet (Audio CD)
For existing fans or Peter Rowan or Tony Rice this cd contains no surprises. The harmonies and picking are ideal as a soundtrack for lazy summer days. The gentle ballad Walls Of Time is revisited once more by Peter Rowan and his voice remains perfectly suited for its expression of loneliness and longing. Tony Rice's guitar suggests a mellow take on the world, the tracks Shady Grove and Let The Harvest Go To Seed are particular highlights. Bryn Davies and Sharon Gilchrist would appear to get limited credit on the album cover but their contributions to the vocal harmonies and double bass and mandolin are integral to this relaxed bluegrass collection.
