Our Young Man

Edmund White's writing is stunningly good and, from that perspective, this book is one of his best. The story is a portrait both of a life, and of relationships - relationships which could only happen as they do in the queer world which, as ever, White depicts with Francis Bacon-like graphic (and often very funny) intensity. Guy, the hero, is something of a Dorian Grey figure (quite deliberately so) but he appeals because he is not seduced by the beauty, charm and sexiness that captivate others, young and old. The comedy and tragedy of life are all here but in away that illustrates the 'stuff happens' quality of the experiences which most of us deal with. You have to be gay to really appreciate this brilliant book.

This is the first in the series I have bought and I was not disappointed. Gordon's photography is brilliant at creating and capturing atmosphere and his models come across as expressive and characterful as well as, in many cases, ultra-sexy.

5.0 out of 5 stars they have probably been among the most beautiful of gay porn models, 28 Aug. 2016

This review is from: Rick Day Bel Ami (Hardcover)
Many books have been made over the years featuring the boys of Bel Ami. Starting with Johan Paulik, they have probably been among the most beautiful of gay porn models, and the tradition continues. This book features many of the present cast, including Kevin Warhol, Dolph Lambert and Kris Evans. The boys are filmed in beautiful settings and, with rare exceptions, each picture is carefully posed to show the physical qualities of the individuals, mostly naked or (provocatively) partially clothed. Rick Day is a master of skin tone and some of his close-ups of water on skin are masterpieces. If you are looking for a bedside book, I doubt if this is the one. Apart from anything else, it is as large as many coffee tables. But all the photos are erotically charged, just as all the models are stunning and it is worth it for the seductive beauty of the boys themselves and the superb artistry with which that beauty has been captured.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful love story, 13 July 2016

I admit I was attracted by the sexy cover but I also really enjoyed the book. Unlike a lot of romantic gay novels, it does not deal with guys who have been emotionally damaged in some way and who find solace and love despite hardship. It is a story of two young university students, one openly gay and the other made aware of his own sexuality by his unexpected attraction to his gay flatmate. The drama is around the agony of love either unfulfilled or unreturned, and of the pain of not knowing. The characters are realistically drawn, as are the everyday aspects of student life. Yes, it has a happy ending, thankfully. But I found it both captivating and moving in the way it paints a picture of the passion and beauty of love in a sexual relationship between two young men.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book as magnificently oversized as Tom's heroes and just as pleasurable., 12 July 2016

This review is from: Tom of Finland XXL (Hardcover)
I first came across Tom when I was in my early 20s and living in Paris in the 70s. Through reading the one readily available French gay magazine, I received through the post a flier for the work of Tom. I was still half trying to persuade myself that I was not gay (not least to protect my job). But the effect of Tom's drawings was electrifying. Could I really be seeing what I thought I was seeing: the graphic description of everything that I didn't dare accept I was desperately lusting after? In the pre-internet age, this was stuff you just did not see at all. Yet here was everything that was arousing about other men, not just graphically portrayed but glorified. In a society that was just about to accept John Inman as the embodiment of what it meant to be 'queer', Tom burst like a tiger among kittens. These men were about as un-camp as you could imagine. No part of their anatomy, let alone a wrist, was allowed to be limp. They were hyper-masculine, dominant, ready to convert the passing and condemnatory stranger to the joys of gay sex, completely unabashed at what they displayed and what they did. For the first time in modern life, male same sex attraction was glorified. All the aspects of male sexuality that one thought of furtively were there to be displayed, accepted, enjoyed and coveted. Attractive girlfriends were no match in Tom's cartoons for the attractions of the passing male stranger. Gay sex was so all right that Tom portrayed it happening as much in public as in private. He legitimised one's feelings and his heroes kicked sand in the faces of a straight world that thought all queers were pansies. He was a pioneer but his art still resonates because it is both extreme and exquisite. This is gay pride in art and it could not have a better champion or a better record and exposition than in this book.

Just Between Us
Just Between Us
by J.H. Trumble
Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down., 19 Jun. 2016
This review is from: Just Between Us (Paperback)
J H Trumble is brilliant at plucking at your heartstrings with a mixture of charm, gritty realism and the sheer ability to portray the joy and poignancy of love. Her technique of telling a story as seen through two principal characters works well when handled as skilfully as it is here (and in previous books). At the heart of this story is the devastating impact of an HIV diagnosis on two young lives. Anyone who has thought themselves to be at risk and has had an HIV test knows that anxiety and the relief when it turns out negative. This book powerfully conveys the opposite (a test that is positive for HIV) - all the more devastating for a 19 year old, i.e. at an age when most of us thought ourselves to be both infallible and immortal. Part of the appeal of the book is that it is not written as a cautionary tale but as life as most of us live it. It is not a book about safe sex but about the vulnerability which, as one of the characters puts it, is what life is all about.

I am a fan of Greg Herren but this is not one of his hits. It cranks into gear very slowly and laboriously and, although it eventually caught my interest, it felt contrived. It has a cast of mostly unattractive characters and even the hero/narrator lacks the spark that has characterised previous Herren heroes. If you too find it laborious, it is nonetheless worth persevering as it gets more involving as it goes on. But, if you are new to Greg Herren, don't start here. All of his other books that I have read have been hits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crooked tree ranch and not so straight hot cowboys., 18 Jun. 2016

I read the version without the new chapter and loved it. It has all the ingredients of a good gay romance: drama, sweet and sexy guys, a villain, the necessary amount of will-they-won't-they and, of course, a happy ending. R J Scott evokes what I imagine to be the atmosphere of a Montana ranch both in terms of scenery and a mixture of tough machismo and both economic and personal vulnerability.

Lap of Luxury
Lap of Luxury
by Mark Henderson
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £59.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent celebration of masculine beauty and sexuality., 10 May 2016
This review is from: Lap of Luxury (Hardcover)
Mark Henderson's style is unmistakeable but not easy to categorise. His models are varied in physique and appearance, portrayed in different settings, which somehow make even the ordinary seem exotic, and in very different poses and states of arousal. Back in the '70s, Tom of Finland managed, through a combination of artistic skill and outrageously sexy glorification of what it is to be gay, to create a whole new perception of masculinity and thus to make gay men feel proud of who they were. Mark Henderson does something similar for the present day. These men are not all beautiful but they are all characterful, not showing off their bodies pornographically or exaggeratedly, but certainly doing so erotically and assertively: "this is who I am and my sexuality is a part of me that I am confidently at ease with". This is a book which may well fuel fantasies but it does so with its feet planted in reality. If I wanted to show someone -albeit someone not easily shocked by the male body in all its glory - what it means to be gay, then this book would be a significant exhibit.
