4.0 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with Denzel, 10 April 2010
This review is from: The Book of Eli [DVD] (DVD)
Another good Denzel Washington film. He really doesn't disappoint and produces another good performance here. I'll keep this short, since people have already gone over the plot. This isn't a complex film, and when looking deeper into it a few bad points can be pulled out of it. But, on the surface this is an entertaining film that could be watched again. Some great fight sequences (that Washington himself performed), good performances from Washington, Gary Oldman and the impressive Mila Kunis. All topped off with a good twist.

Overall, not a classic, but entertaining and defiantely worth a look. Probably more of a love/hate film, so maybe renting it first would be a better idea before deciding if it is for you or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive, 19 Mar. 2010
This review is from: Shutter Island [DVD] (2010) (DVD)
As soon as I heard about this film I was very excited. Sounded like a great plot, plus DiCaprio and Scorsese make a great team. This film is no exception, it has everything a thriller film should have. Twists, mystery, suspense, great cinematography, and an excellent ending. A very un-Scorsese like film in my opinion, I had to keep reminding myself while watching it that he was directing. DiCaprio is fantastic, and had it been released around Oscar time I'm sure he would have been in the running for a Best Actor nomination. I won't say much about the plot, as it is best to go in and not know much about it. But, a casual film viewer that just wants entertainment may not enjoy this. It requires a lot of thinking, as the plot is complex and there are many characters involved. If you like your films complex and like ones that delve deep and make you think, then this should be perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Performances, Interesting Film., 14 Mar. 2010

Since there are no reviews currently, I guess I'll add one so people know whether this film is worth viewing.
On paper, this film sounds simple, with a typical storyline. But, if you dig deeper this becomes a very powerful drama. Capt. Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) is going off to fight for his country, leaving behind his wife Grace (Natalie Portman)and his two daughters. At the same time, his brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) has just got out of prison. I won't give anything away, but what follows is a very emotional story that not only shows the effects of war, but how people can change drastically in a matter of weeks. Being a fan on both Portman and Gyllenhaal, I was instantly drawn to this, and they both give excellent perfoemances. Very subtle, but you really believe in them and connect with their characters. Top marks though, goes to Tobey Maguire, who before this I didn't really rate much as an actor. His performances in the Spiderman films, for example, never made be think he could do anything very dramatic. But he is vastly different in this, and is able to portray many emotions perfectly and really grips the viewer. This is perfectly shown during his 'break down' scene, which looks very realistic thanks to him. There was talk that he may be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, but sadly that didn't happen.

Overall, if you are a fan of action war films, this may not be for you. War is the side topic of this film and there is no action. If you like deep, emotional, and sometimes harrowing dramas, then this is perfect. This film raises many questions, and should keep you thinking long after the credits have rolled.
