Damage [Blu-ray] [2009]
Damage [Blu-ray] [2009]
Dvd ~ Steve 'Stone Cold' Austin
Price: £2.90

3.0 out of 5 stars Fight hard to survive. Bring The Pain!, 14 Nov. 2016
This review is from: Damage [Blu-ray] [2009] (Blu-ray)
An ex-con battles it out in the cage to pay for the operation that would save the daughter of his victim. Along the way he finds fatherly love, and friendship, in the most unlikely of places.

Nicely Directed by Jeff King. Steve Austin does well with the dialouge he's been given and shows he can take the lead in the film and brings sympathy to his character. And with a decent supporting cast with Walton Goggins as his manager, and Laura Vandervoort providing a bit of glamour to the film. Decent action scenes, the fights are solid and keeps you watching. It does have a nice little story to get you there and keeps you interested, The film moves at a good pace so you are never bored. Well worth a viewing. I am glad I bought it.

Overall a solid action film. Enjoy!

Big Game [Blu-ray]
Big Game [Blu-ray]
Dvd ~ Samuel L. Jackson
Price: £8.99

3.0 out of 5 stars The President has one small chance of survival., 8 Sept. 2016
This review is from: Big Game [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
When Air Force One is shot down by terrorists leaving the President of the United States (Samuel L. Jackson) stranded in the wilderness, there is only one person around who can save him - a 13-year old boy(Onni Tommila). With the terrorists closing in to capture their own "Big Game" prize, the unlikely duo must team up to escape their hunters and survive the most extraordinary 24 hours of their lives.

Well directed, decent acting and supporting cast. Some decent action and CGI enough to keep you entertained, simple storyline to follow. The scenery is so breathtaking while the green is mixed with white as well. And a bit humour from Samuel L. Jackson and Onni Tommila .
All in all, if you don't take this movie, written and directed by Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander, too seriously it can be an entertaining flick. There's also a twist at the end which I thought worked rather well.

Good little action flick. Enjoy!!

3.0 out of 5 stars It's a Job. It Isn't Personal. Well, Maybe a Little...., 27 Jun. 2016
A bounty hunter learns that his next target is his ex-wife, a reporter working on a murder cover-up. Soon after their reunion, the always-at-odds duo find themselves on a run-for-their-lives adventure.

Well Directed, good cast, decent acting, good editing and supporting cast. Gerard Butler and Jennifer aniston have good chemistry. There's a bit of excitement here and there, and the occasional sense of jeopardy and a couple of laughs here and there through the movie. A reasonable quantity of story runs through it and some action to keep you entertained.

Overall a good comedy/action/romance

3.0 out of 5 stars The future must be won! This is not a game!, 12 April 2016
This review is from: Ender's Game [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Young Ender Wiggin is recruited by the International Military to lead the fight against the Formics, a genocidal alien race which nearly annihilated the human race in a previous invasion.

Based on a popular sci-fi novel by Orson Scott Card, this military space adventure is set in a future in which the aliens have attacked earth.
Big-budget sci-fi starring Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley and Harrison Ford

Nicely directed, good acting and supporting cast. It's sporadically engaging blockbuster, which boasts with great special effects and action.
And keeps you watching and moving at a good pace so your not bored.

Overall a good sci-fi film! Enjoy.

The Relic [Blu-ray]
The Relic [Blu-ray]
Dvd ~ Tom Sizemore
Price: £7.99

3.0 out of 5 stars The Next Evolution In Terror., 7 April 2016
This review is from: The Relic [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
A homicide detective and an anthropologist try to destroy a South American lizard-like god, who's on a people eating rampage in a Chicago museum.

Nicely directed by Peter Hyams, "The relic" is a atmospheric, sinister, dark and creepy film. It's well paced and keeps you watching. Penelope Ann Miller and Tom Sizemore, are both good, and once the chase starts, it's gripping. Decent CGI,action gore and supporting cast.
The monster design is courtesy of Stan Winston and studio, and they do their usual bang-up job.

Good old-fashioned 90's head-ripping monster fun.

Good fun overall.
Seven out of 10.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heroes don't get any bigger. No shield. No armor. No problem., 24 Mar. 2016
This review is from: Ant-Man [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym(Michael Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

Well directed, good casting, great CGI and good action to keep you entertained, decent acting and funny.

Final Verdict: Marvel continues to play the game well when it comes to popularising somewhat obscure characters, and every actor delivered on the action and comedy in a smart and clever way. Easily I look forward to seeing this character in his next appearance, and this could be the most fun and accessible movie Marvel has made yet. 8/10.

4.0 out of 5 stars What could possibly come between a match made in heaven? The parents. Dinner. And a nightclub called... (The Birdcage), 12 Mar. 2016
This review is from: The Birdcage [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Armand Goldman owns a popular drag nightclub in South Miami Beach. His long-time lover, Albert, stars there as Starina. "Their" son Val (actually Armand's by his one heterosexual fling, twenty years before) comes home to announce his engagement to Barbara Keeley, daughter of Kevin Keeley, US Senator, and co-founder of the Committee for Moral Order. The Senator and family descend upon South Beach to meet Val, his father and "mother." What ensues is comic chaos.

The Birdcage is a funny, slapstick and well directed but ultimately slight farce but did very well at the box office raking in 125 million dollars. It's rare that another actor gets to upstage Robin Williams, but Nathan Lane does so wonderfully, playing an ungracefully aging drag queen who performs at the Miami nightclub owned by Williams, his subdued life partner. It's the role that catapulted Lane into the American popular consciousness, if also typecasting him in the process. His swishy hysterics never get tiresome, but it's even funnier watching him try to learn machismo from Williams, who can "pass" for heterosexual. Williams' treacly scenes connecting with his son are the weakest parts of the movie, which hits a more comfortable stride during its brilliantly staged, elaborate cover-ups aimed at hoodwinking Gene Hackman's right-wing politician. Almost as funny as Lane, in a supporting role, is the scantily clad Hank Azaria, as the couple's flamboyant housekeeper who loves dancing to Gloria Estefan. The Birdcage is also notable for a pre-Ally McBeal appearance by Calista Flockhart, who plays the son's fiancée.

Overall a classic comedy not to be missed. Enjoy!! a classic Robin Williams film.

4.0 out of 5 stars The extraordinary true story of Solomon Northup, 15 Jan. 2016
In 1841, the Afro-American violinist Solomon Northup is a free man, living with his wife and children in Saratoga Springs, New York. He is hired by two men for a two-week tour in Washington with their theatrical company. However Solomon is kidnapped and sold as a slave in New Orleans with the nickname Platt. Along twelve years, he works in the plantations and has abusive treatment of his masters, until the day he meets the Canadian abolitionist Bass that promises to send a letter to his family.

Very well directed by Steve Mcqueen (and artist). McQueen's style is slow and penetrating with some long and wordless scenes totally captivating.
As a piece of social history, this movie is simply stunning. The story line was straightforward the entire movie showed a character who persevered in circumstances inconceivable to most and kept going and never lost faith that he would return to his family. Fantastic acting by Chiwetel and Michael Fassbender and with a good supporting cast. It came as no surprise to see Hans Zimmer's name appear on the end credits as he is one of the greatest cinematic composers of all time in my opinion. Nyong'o, and Cumberbatch were brilliant in their roles, The last, but certainly not least, stellar appearance I have already alluded to. Brad Bitt plays a Canadian contract constructor who was instrumental to carrying the message to "the North" that finally led to Northup's rescue.

Overall, "12 Years a Slave" was a great film, certainly worth the awards it will surely receive. Enjoy.

Won 3 Oscars. Another 229 wins & 300 nominations.

Teenager Ethan Wate is obsessed with his urge to finish high school and go on to college in order to leave the small town of Gatlin, South Carolina behind, until a mysterious girl begins to inhabit his dreams. When he meets Lena Duchannes, a newcomer who has just enrolled in his school, Ethan knows she is the girl in his dreams. Lena is rejected by the rest of her classmates for being the granddaughter of Macon Ravenwood, whom the town's superstitious residents consider to be a devil-worshiper. But Ethan gives her a ride anyway and they fall in love. Lena reveals to her new boyfriend that she is a witch, and that on her sixteenth birthday she will be claimed by either the forces of light or of darkness. She will remain in the light, but only if she does not remain in love with Ethan. To make matters worse, her evil mother, Sarafine, is casting spells to push Lena to the dark side. Ethan joins her in a search to find a magic spell to save their doomed love. Will the lovers succeed?

I enjoyed this film it was entertaining enough, though I understand many fans are unhappy with the adaptation.Good supporting cast ,the acting was good as well, and Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert had nice chemistry as Ethan and Lena. Of course, Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson, and Viola Davis gave great performances together. A nice little story about supernatural powers, good vs evil, love and the power of love. For those looking for a good fantasy movie with love, action, and funny moments, this is the film for you. It was good from the beginning to end.

Acting (On all accounts) 8/10 VFX (for what there was) 7/10 Costume & Design 8/10 (Supernatural Romance, forbidden love, did it fit well in the film?) 7.5/10

(My score) 7/10

Overall a decent little supernatural film. Enjoy!
