5.0 out of 5 stars An underrated gem!, 3 Dec. 2012

I saw this the second night it was shown in London (1969), and bought the soundtrack album at the cinema. A long time ago now, but although Peter and Petula never liked the songs that much, a lot of people did! And now, how great to have that soundtrack again. The songs have remained as fresh as they were all those years ago; 'And the Sky Smiled Too' will always bring back my own holiday in Paestum, and I have also stood on the same spot in Syon Park where Mr Chips and Katherine share their first kiss. A lovely, gentle film, and a score that evokes the love story perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars She should have got the film!, 3 Dec. 2012
This review is from: Mame (Audio CD)
Why, oh, why, did the powers that were not choose Angela Lansbury to play Mame Dennis in the film version? This recording shows how good she is with the songs (and with the awards she won for the stage production, how good she was in that, too). Think what she would have brought to the movie! That turkey would have been a bird of paradise.
She can belt with the best of 'em (We Need A Little Christmas), and sing tenderly when the songs requires her to do so (When He Walked Into My Life).
Excellent.

Heard this set at a friend's house when it was first released on vinyl. Bought it immediately, and then bought it again when cassettes were all the rage(!) I now have it on CD. Although essentially a late-night album, it gets a lot of playing during daylight hours as well. Classy and classic. Timeless!

5.0 out of 5 stars Luscious Linda, 3 Dec. 2012

A wonderful collection of standards given first class performances by Linda Rondstadt.
Nelson Riddle's backing sets her voice off perfectly.
Whenever I play this to someone who knows it not, it is a sure thing he or she will buy it without delay.
Gorgeous late-night listening for anyone who likes classy ladies singing classy songs.

Oh, dear, what ever has happened to Barbra Streisand? Once her albums were full of life, and you felt she had enjoyed herself when recording them, but with this set she plods on from beginning to end. Get some fun back into singing, Babs!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth Taylor-ing for Christmas, 3 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
James Taylor's voice suits anything he chooses to sing, and here in his Christmas offering he sounds superb. Standout tracks are 'Some Children See Him', 'Who Comes This Night', and a very cheeky 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' with Natalie Cole. This CD, along with (I must add) Dan Fogelberg's own beautiful Christmas disc, are among the most played by me during the twelve days...

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street [DVD] [1982]
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street [DVD] [1982]
Dvd ~ Angela Lansbury
Offered by marxwax
Price: £19.97

4.0 out of 5 stars Smashing Sondheim!, 2 Dec. 2012
Thank heaven this production was recorded, else we unfortunates who never saw Angela Lansbury as Mrs Lovett would have just the audio version to enjoy (which, by the way, is a masterpiece). Lansbury and George Hearn ham it up to the highest degree, but how else could such a gruesome tale be portrayed in a musical? To see the normally elegant Angela cavorting about as she does here, is something else! A gem as far as she and Mr Hearn are concerned.
The rest of the cast are somewhat overshadowed by the two leads, and (this is the reason for four stars and not five) the actress who plays Johanna is probably the most irritatingly forced soprano I have heard in my life. When singing, the poor dear looks as though she is about to burst!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic all the Way!, 2 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A fantastic recording of Sondheim's dark and gruesome musical. After seeing the film, I wondered what all the fuss was about, for the two leads were too 'Hollywood-ised' for comfort. However, I saw the DVD with George Hearn and Angela Lansbury as Todd and Mrs Lovett, and was bowled over. Then I found the MP3 version and downloaded it as quickly as possible. What a masterpiece, with the original Todd, Len Cariou, having a slight edge over George Hearn (who is on the DVD). But for my money, it is Lansbury who shines, as she relishes every word and spits it out in a glorious Cockney accent. The London production (2012) is very good indeed, but nothing compares to this, the first, and the greatest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jarvis reads Jerome, 2 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I first read the book more years ago than I care to remember, and laughed from beginning to end. Every now and then, when comfort reading is the order of the day, out comes 'Three Men', and the laughter starts up again. When I began collecting audiobooks, one of the first I looked for was 'Three Men', and was delighted to find that the marvellous actor Martin Jarvis had recorded it in its entirety. As soon as it arrived, on it went, and the laughter, once again, came forth. His reading, as with his other audio work, is brilliant, and the characters and situations are as fresh as the day JKJ put pen to paper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dickens + Margolyes = unadulterated joy!, 2 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dickens' Women (Audio CD)
I heard this on the radio one Christmas soon after Ms Margolyes put the programme together, and sat riveted throughout. Her performance shows the deep affection she feels for the characters she portrays, and the sheer joy she gives the audience is almost palpable. If you think Dickens is stuffy, listen to this, and you will soon change your mind.
