Benedict XVI's Reform: The Liturgy Between Innovation and Tradition
Benedict XVI's Reform: The Liturgy Between Innovation and Tradition
by Nicola Bux
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.71

5.0 out of 5 stars Truth prevails, 25 Jun. 2014

Whether you are for the Latin Mass or against the Latin Mass; whether you are pro Benedict XVI or con, this is a very important book to explain what was done in allowing two forms of the Roman Catholic Mass to co-exist side by side. Bux is not trying to force one side or the other, he is simply explaining the theology behind the action of Benedict XVI.

The Voice of the Church at Prayer: Reflections on Liturgy and Language
The Voice of the Church at Prayer: Reflections on Liturgy and Language
by Uwe Michael Lang
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Such reason in a mine field, 25 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The sheer scope of this work is magisterial but presented in such a clear and readable fashion. Not only does he offer the history of the development and use of Latin in the liturgy of the Latin Rite, he situates his research within the Church today and the many heated discussions about the use of Latin. Excellent work of outstanding scholarship.

Vatican II: Renewal Within Tradition
Vatican II: Renewal Within Tradition
by Matthew L. Lamb
Edition: Paperback
Price: £19.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 25 Jun. 2014

This takes all the hype out of both the liberal and conservative discussions about what really was said at Vatican II. All of us in the Roman Catholic Church need to read this together with the council documents again to see how we have gotten many things terribly wrong. Our misunderstanding caused by faulty teaching about the council by previous generations is very much in need of correction. Once we really understand what Vatican II was all about we can, hopefully, get the Church back on the right track. Matthew Lamb does a good job at getting this process started.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read, 25 Jun. 2014

Excellent book and beautifully translated from the German. One can see a bit where he is coming from in the recent discussions concerning communion for divorced and remarried Catholics in this book, although this was written earlier than the planned discussions so there is nothing specific in the book. He writes very convincingly on the place of mercy in the life of the Christian and the life of the Church. Solid Catholic theology without being too academic. Nor is he taking sides as liberal v. conservative. It really is a good book about a topic no one is really writing about today. Very valuable contribution to a much needed discussion within the Church and in the halls of power in the secular sphere.

3.0 out of 5 stars On the small side, 25 Jun. 2014

Should probably warn the buyer that the sizes are on the small side so best to order a larger size than one would normally. But the product itself is fine.

The Heresy of Formlessness: The Roman Liturgy and Its Enemy
The Heresy of Formlessness: The Roman Liturgy and Its Enemy
by Martin Mosebach
Edition: Paperback
Price: £11.00

3.0 out of 5 stars Expected more, 8 Feb. 2014

Not the best book I've read. He seems to lose the plot a bit plus there is the inevitable "when I was a boy" side to his difficulties with the post Vatican II liturgy. There are other books that are much better on the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction, 8 Feb. 2014

For those not familiar with the Eastern Orthodox Church this book is a good place to start. All the basics are there in a clear and easy read. Nothing is watered down - you get the truth presented in its fullness but it reads very smoothly. Highly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing special, 8 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Aquinas at Prayer (Paperback)
First, the book would have profited from a better proofreader. Second, much of the material seems put together in an artificial way without much sense of direction. There is also a sort of "pop religiosity" about the style. On the positive side, the exposition of Aquinas and his devotion to the Eucharist/Blessed Sacrament is very good. Perhaps Murray would have done better to concentrate his efforts on this.

The Last Years of Saint Therese: Doubt and Darkness, 1895-1897

5.0 out of 5 stars True picture of St. Therese, 8 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Most of the biographies of St. Therese are rather sweet and sentimental. This one is not. Thomas Nevin has done copious amounts of research and he is able to work with French originals as well as having actually spoken with French Carmelite Nuns. He gives us Therese as a human being, struggling like the rest of us with her own life and how it was shaped by her upbringing; the impact of her entrance into religious life at such an early age, and the shock of terminal illness. Nevin gives the original French plus the English translation of the many source materials he uses. It is not an easy book to read but it is the truest picture of Therese and Carmel that has yet to be published.

Best wind-up/solar torch I've had to date. Great torch. Light weight, charges in regular daylight and has the simple wind-up option. Will buy another one soon. Highly recommended.
