5.0 out of 5 stars Even better the second time, 7 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a darkly comic book, by turns tragic abs uplifting. I first read it on a friends recommendation several years ago and really enjoyed it. Then, last week, it was featured on Radio 4s Book Club and I realise that I had forgotten much of the story. Reading it again I just kept laughing despite the depressingly realistic awful behaviour of so many of the characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick ideas. Long lasting results., 31 July 2015
Yes, there are 50 ideas in this book. Yes, none of them cover more than 2 pages. Yes, you'll read them quickly. But the thinking behind each idea is deep and the implications are big. If you do read this book cover to cover (and you should ;) remember to come back and revisit it again and again. Each time you will get more out of it.

Each idea is divided into 3 parts (a detailed description; the key benefits; how to make it work) making it easy to see how you can use it. The ideas themselves are grouped into 4 sections (generating test ideas; designing good checks; improving testability; managing large test suites) which helps you find ideas that will help with your current challenges.

If I have one criticism of this book, it is that it uses the term 'check' without first describing how its meaning has evolved in the test community. Elisabeth Hendrickson has popularised the notion that testing combines checking (performing predefined, scripted test activities) and exploring (performing test design and test execution at the same time). But this is a small gripe, and this is a great book.

Xanpan: Team Centric Agile Software Development

5.0 out of 5 stars An important contribution to the agile literature, 28 July 2015
This book is an important contribution to the agile literature. It tackles the challenges that most teams face, head-on, by proposing alternatives that some might consider heretical. This sort of discussion is invaluable in the face of corporate certification of activities that promote blind faith and dogma rather than observation and critical thought.

As you read this book, you will probably find yourself disagreeing with Allan from time to time. I certainly did. You will gain from these differences of opinion, as long as you are mature enough to actually take the time to think through the motivation for Allan's suggestions and consider the possibly beneficial repercussions they might have.

You will also find new and innovative techniques that will help you address some of the perennial issues that have been ignored by other popular development approaches. How will you cope with unplanned work? What happens when priorities change suddenly? Why isn't the product owner prioritising technical tasks? When will we find time to implement the improvements identified in the retrospective?

Go read the book. You'll be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short, well written and very helpful book., 12 Feb. 2015

I've read The Goal and The Phoenix Project and they're both good, but this is better. A believable business novel that deals in a realistic way with real problems. You can read a longer review on my blog at http://claysnow.co.uk/rolling-rocks-downhill/ , but the conclusion is the same: read this book if you want to learn new approaches to improving software delivery.

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable. Every agile team should have a copy., 30 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very good book - almost indispensable. It covers a lot of ground, but is structured in a way that allows you to get what you need without getting bogged down.

I particularly like the way the book has been constructed with:
- mind maps at the beginning of every section and chapter to really help you navigate to the place that interests you right now
- handy graphics in the margin that identify which confidence-building practice is being discussed in the text
- practical, grounded experience reports and advice from real testers solving real challenges
- extensive links to some of the best online writings of other leading testers

There's a lot in this book that will keep me coming back to dip in for another nugget. And there's a wealth of references to further reading that I've either forgotten about or missed entirely.

I highly recommend this book. I hope you'll be as delighted with it as I am.

Fifty Quick Ideas to Improve Your User Stories

5.0 out of 5 stars Using User Stories? Read this book!, 6 Jan. 2015
This is a must-read book for everyone working with User Stories - and that means pretty much anyone that's working with any agile method. Every one of Gojko and David's 50 ideas sparks thoughts that led me to valuable insights. Each one is fully thought out - and delivered with unassailable motivation and helpful examples. Don't be misled by the thin-ness of the book or the mention of "Quick" in the title, though. In that respect these ideas are quite like poetry or haiku, in that they convey some very deep ideas in very few words. And the pictures are nice too.

I loved this movie as a teenager, but it has dated (no surprises there), is very long and the music is not as enjoyable as I remember it.
