2.0 out of 5 stars Save yourself a frustration., 30 Jun. 2013
Bad, bad sound engineering. The voices are blurred somehow, veiled. At some point in the first act one cannot say if Monforte is a baritone or a dramatic tenor. Elena's score is known to be particularly challenging, but how to follow?

Besides, the soloists voices are feeble in contrast with the chorus. Right at the beginning if you try to amplify to a decent volume, just enough to appreciate the individual voices, the next chorus score will blow the windows away. Afterwards it's improving a bit, but it's still irritating. And these annoying applauses, what a nuisance...

Levine's 1974 recording remains unbeatable. You may still get it for around $100.

Edit: I was sure that the album was bought from Amazon, sorry. I will not delete the review, however.

Spectacular and flawless performance by a well integrated orchestra. Together with a very good sound engineering, it's a winner. The fourth movement is terrifying. Highly recommended.

Breathtaking HIP performance by a truly integrated orchestra and an outstanding soloist. In combination with an exceptionally good sound engineering, will keep you motionless from the beginning to the end.

5 stars, 4 stars... weird. The violins squeal, it takes a few moments to realize that this not greased door is the cello, the ensemble sounds as spread over a whole stage and the music sounds unnatural. Otherwise this is a fine recording.
