5.0 out of 5 stars A Breath Of Fresh Air....., 20 Mar. 2016
downloaded this album after it kept appearing as an ad in the corner of my PC screen. The cover appealed to me with a picture of a bearded guy with a Martin guitar, and at less than a fiver I thought why not. Well what a pleasant surprise, this really is a breath of fresh air and a bargain to boot. Jake plays beautiful fingerstyle guitar, combined with a quirky sometimes almost talking narrative vocal and all on original compositions. The lyrics are like poetry and appear clumsily on paper, but combined with the music and the vocal style, they merge beautifully and my only complaint is why is there not a full length album here. The production on this EP works really well, sort of lo-fi and earthy, but it really compliments the performance. I also checked out Jake's website and you get the impression that there is no urgency for this music to be recorded and marketed, but that some other natural process is in place, which these days is really unusual. So the verdict is......, Excellent, five stars, no doubt about it, buy it, share it and then maybe Jake might make some more of his beautiful music available to us.... ..

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Skeletons, Beautiful Album........, 16 April 2015
I remember the first time I heard Gavin Clarks voice on the Sun House album, 'Crazy on the Weekend', I bought a used copy, second hand in a library sale in Hornsey, it was a part of my regular routine years ago on a Saturday morning, walk up the high road, go to the bakers, 'Dunns', buy sausage rolls, eat them quick, cruise the local record shops and then head for the library and see what they had to offer. Then the hike home usually after a pint of Guinness in the Haringay Arms, with a view to sitting back and spending the afternoon relaxing and wading through the contents of the days contraband. And then that voice appeared, pained, fresh but dark, beautifully melodic, completely original just opened up like a total breath of fresh air. I have been waiting it seems for an eternity to hear this album, and I have to say there are no disappointments, its a really fine piece of work that will no doubt gather cult status as time passes. Gavin Clark, now tragically no longer with us, was without doubt one of the UK's greatest and most underated singer songwriters, who's potential I am sure wasn't anywhere near being reached or fulfilled by the time of his untimely death. I have followed his career as best I could from hearing him sing with Sun House, Clayhill, and Unkle and I have even seen him play a couple of times live once at the Union Chapel in Islington and then at the Kings Hall in Euston. The Shane Meadows, hand made DVD which accompanies this set gives an accurate picture of Gavin performing live, excruciatingly shy in front of an audience, even though it is set in his own front room surrounded by family and friends, but somehow this adds to the dynamic of his performance. Gavin wasn't just a gifted singer songwriter but a great lyricist and poet as well, buy this album and enjoy it for all the qualities it displays, it really is a must buy and one to share

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful cook book....., 3 April 2014

This review is from: Jerusalem (Hardcover)
I don't normally read the introductions and prefaces in cookbooks, I generally like to head straight for the photographs and work backwards, however I got drawn into the background of the origins of this book and I have to say it has added a new dimension to my approach to enjoying its content. Yotam draws on the wealth of Jerusalems diverse cultural food heritage and wraps it all up into a melange, rich in colour, texture and form, which is both beautifully written and photographed. I love the idea that good food is a unifying factor and a cause for good across different cultures, and whilst none of us are that naive to think that this book will stop all the factious problems in the region it does a great job trying. Fantastic and exciting food recipes from fascinating part of the world.

by Rose George

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than your usual travelogue......., 30 Sept. 2013
Much better than your usual travelogue, Rose George plunges head first into unfathomable world of shipping and freight. A mixture of adventure, including first hand experience of 21st century pirates and piracy, the dodgy practices of shipping lines hiding behind the financial and human abuse of the flags of convenience, and a real insight into the day job carried out by countless souls traversing the worlds shipping lines trying to earn an honest wage, whilst delivering our new tele or ipad. Rose George manages to crunch the scale of this huge industry down into a more definable, understandable and comprehensible form, whilst giving it a vibrance and taking none of its importance away from our daily lives. I really enjoyed this book, its honesty, its humour and its sheer scale, a great read....!!!! Highly Recomended.....!!!!!
