A great trio in the tradition of forties vocals, but more than that, very jazz fuelled.Sax player Jeff Lederer adds swing ,like crazy on some tracks! The harmony sparkles with emotion and humour.Exceptionally recommended,as too is Hilary Gardner's solo disc,The Great City,my album of the year in 2015.

5.0 out of 5 stars A release after 53 years.A classic!, 2 Feb. 2017
I purchased this lp upon release in 1964 and still have my vinyl copy.Basically it's one of the great rock/r and b albums;listening to it over the airwaves on Radio Luxembourg was an enlightening experience,The Beatles second album followed in my collection but this album for many years was a firm favourite .It's great soulful rock, superb sax accomplished playing, rasping vocals by Alex Harvey.I read many years later that it wasn't recorded live at the Star Club as advertised,a pity, but you wouldn't have guessed!

5.0 out of 5 stars An 80s classic!, 29 Aug. 2016

great soundtrack, great tv serial. Why the serial is not available on dvd is beyond. The serial was shown at the bfi a year or so ago but i was on holiday! Therefore the tapes still exist. The music is a great mixture of original 20s jazz tunes and an original score by Richard Rodney Bennett. Both the music and the serial is magnificent.

A relaxed set, well worth buying if a Charlie Haden fan.I particularly liked the sax playing of Ernie Watts,I always consider him underrated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top 10 of all time greatest Soul albums., 5 Feb. 2016

I bought the vinyl copy of this album over 35 years ago,it is an absolute classic, perhaps the best Soul album from Philly, certainly in my top ten of greatest Soul albums.Other reviewers are incorrect, the final track is spelt SWET.Even the track Feelings has a great soulful intensity while the title track is absolutely marvellous,a fantastic groove.Essential!

I first heard Mary Wells in 1963 when i bought a Motown compilation lp,she was the famous singer on Motown and her departure to 20th Century Fox a year later was considered a surprise. The album,Mary Wells is certainly good but lacks that Motown arrangements. The Beatles tribute album is slightly better although more jazz tinged arrangements would have been preferred. It is second in class to the Keely Smith Beatles tribute album recorded in 1964 but, alas, not available on cd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recalling an experimental time., 19 Nov. 2015
An early view of the playing of Jan Garbarek especially, early 70s when jazz was in free form and experimental, tinged with rock.An interesting album, varied,it has not dated.

4.0 out of 5 stars An underrated album., 17 Nov. 2015
This review is from: Last Time I Saw Him (Audio CD)
I recently purchased this album,a second hand vinyl copy.It is a more popular format rather than soulful but nontheless very entertaining. The mood captures the vibe of the early mid seventies, think The Sting and Love Story films.Regarding the songs,an interesting mix, songwriters unknown to me but classic covers like Turn Around (Harry Belafonte)and Behind Closed Doors.Playful tunes,(the title track)mixed with romantic songs,a very good album, underrated i would say.
