Saturday at M.I.9: The Classic Account of the WW2 Allied Escape Organisation
Saturday at M.I.9: The Classic Account of the WW2 Allied Escape Organisation
by Airey Neave
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Testament to bravery., 28 Mar. 2015

A fascinating account of the escape lines through occupied Europe. These routes were organised and run by wonderfully brave people who usually ended up by being caught or betrayed. They were then subjected to horrific treatment often resulting in death or permanent damage to their health. No one who has not lived under enemy occupation can imagine the fear of the knock on the door that these people lived with. We owe them a great debt.

My Paper Chase: True Stories of Vanished Times - An Autobiography
by Harold Evans

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended reading., 17 Nov. 2014

A thoroughly absorbing read. How a lad from a working class background reached the top of the newspaper World. Oh for proprietors with the integrity of Lord Thompson in the present World of newspapers. Ironic how the corrupt print unions shot themselves in the foot by allowing Murdoch to appear on the scene.

A very good account of the life of this wonderful man. His humanity to the sick and defenceless is truly inspirational. Oh for another Cheshire in today's celeb dominated society. A thoroughly enjoyable book.

The Last British Dambuster: One man's extraordinary life and the raid that changed history
by George Johnny Johnson
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing story., 22 July 2014

A great book. Very hard to put down. 'Johnny' comes over as a thoroughly decent and unpretentious man. Cf some our our 'plastic' celebs today. His description of the sounds and smells of the Lancaster bring you close to being in with him! I loved his opinion of revisionist historians (with which I totally agree). We owe heroes like ' Johnny' Johnson and his chums, from many nations, a huge debt which we should never forget.

4.0 out of 5 stars sheep and more sheep., 8 Jun. 2014

I found this to be a very interesting read but only wish I could retain in my head the nuances of the cross breeding of the various breeds of sheep. I loved the chapter on Herdwicks, for which the author obviously has a soft spot. They are also my favourites. If you wish to know more about those woolly jumpers on legs that inhabit our fields, this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvellous no nonsense lady., 8 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very good read. Lady Trumpington is a down-to-earth no nonsense person with a great streak of kindness running through her. I liked her advice to Peter Jones to go forth and multiply! Also her two fingered salute to Lord King in the House of Lords. Long may this country produce ladies of this ilk.

3.0 out of 5 stars Norfolk Trivia., 14 Feb. 2014

OK if you are into collecting trivial facts. I don't know how many are correct though. Certainly it is a mistake to say that Lord Nelson lost his right eye at the Battle of the Nile. Also, it is strange that Parson Woodforde doesn't get a mention.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book., 24 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I do not usually write reviews but in this case I felt I had to say what a wonderful book Russell Miller has written. Mind you, he did have a marvelous subject to write about. William Slim, Uncle Bill, comes over as a very unassuming man, quite without the ego and pettiness that affected many of the top men. He had the knack of identifying with all ranks and he even got on well with Vinegar Joe Stillwell. No wonder the men of 'his' 14th. Army adored him and later, the Aussies took him to their hearts as Governor General. As another reviewer has said, the inclusion of maps would have been a great help, but do not let this small niggle put you off buying this wonderful book and learning about a great general.

Emma Darwin: The Wife of an Inspirational Genius: The Inspirational Wife of a Genius

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing woman., 1 Sept. 2011

This is a thoroughly readable and moving book about Charles Darwin's cousin and wife Emma. The reader is introduced to the intermarried families of the Allens, Wedgewoods and Darwins, and what an interesting bunch they all are. Undoubtedly without Emma, Charles would not have had the support to produce the earth-shattering work that he did. Thoroughly recommended.
