5.0 out of 5 stars The start of something special, 17 May 2017
I loved everything about this book. It's that rare combination: characters you believe in, a compelling storyline AND great writing. All of which allowed me to get lost in the story and really care about what happened to the heroine. The poetry at the heart of the story is satisfyingly ambiguous: there's a hint that all is not what it seems about the beautiful book that comes into our heroine's care; the way it seems to bind her to it is the first clue. Similarly, the 'enemy', the completely creepy cadaveri, have something about them that evokes our sympathy even as they repulse our senses...

The story leaps off the page; the writing is so good that it's 'invisible'; and the general atmosphere of the story remains long after the last page is read. When I finished The Devil's Poetry I had that smug feeling you get when you know you're in at the beginning of something special; Louise Cole is something special.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant product, 27 Sept. 2016

Absolutely fantastic product. I'm not strong but I was able to hold up my end of some extremely heavy furniture AND carry the pieces down a spiral staircase. I won't ever even try to move heavy objects again without these. They are brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty bed for a child or a small adult, 21 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love this little bed. It looks great and is very cosy. BUT you really wouldn't want to be a fully grown adult sleeping in it every night. It's a child's bed; there really isn't any way around this. One of the connecting posts immediately got a crack in it during construction, but it seems strong enough, despite that. I'm pretty happy with it.

It holds my clothes but it isn't very strong. I'd say it's a good temporary solution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving and ... interesting, 21 May 2015

Fascinating. Confirms many things you kind of ... almost ... sort of remember. Take it as metaphor, story or truth--any which way, it's oddly comforting and ultimately life-affirming.

Chords of Infinity: A Science Fiction Anthology
Chords of Infinity: A Science Fiction Anthology
by T F Grant
Edition: Paperback
Price: £5.25

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection of stories, 21 May 2015

This is a fascinating collection of tales: deeply intelligent and insightful, and always interesting. Its appeal surpasses any genre categorisation. The Lucius and Felix stories are wonderfully slick and witty, while the Cusp stories are as often downright funny as they are disturbing. The final story in the collection, The Ragged Dancers, has a pace and poetry that will stay with you long after you close the book. Grant is the real deal and this accomplished collection of stories is a real gift of a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great read!, 4 May 2015

Even before you open this novel, the cover gives a glimpse of what's to come: something glamorous and a little sad and noirish. It's a great cover for what turns out to be a very good book indeed. Lisa Liebermann is the real thing: an accomplished writer and storyteller who convinces from the first sentence, and leads the reader confidently straight into the heart of another era and other lives. It's hard to believe this is the first Cara Walden mystery: Cara emerges fully formed, both a product and a victim of the glamorous, insecure world of 1950s Hollywood, London and Italy. Valentino, Gloria Swanson, Cary Grant, Grace Kelly--they all make appearances, but they never manage to upstage our heroine. The period detail isn't overlaid onto the story for effect; it's an intrinsic part of the mood and motivation of characters and events.

I especially liked the fabulous, rather tragic Francesca, the mistress desperate for a child; and the doomed Dory isn't a character I'll forget in a hurry, either. The story leads resolutely towards the solving of a mystery, but it's the journey along the way that I really enjoyed. It's been a long time since I've read anything so chock-full of expansive detail--the period, its history and social practices and politics. I was gently educated at the same time as I was entertained. I really enjoyed All the Wrong Places, and look forward to more of Cara Walden.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good fun!, 10 Feb. 2015

This review is from: The Last Prince (Kindle Edition)
I give this book five stars for its sheer enjoyment factor. The heroine is feisty and her observations often hilarious. The hero is appropriately enigmatic, and the prince--and in particular his relationship with the heroine--is really heartwarming. There was a definite social commentary trying to break through the surface, which was more or less successful at different points in the story, but on the whole I enjoyed this as a good-humoured romance with a down-to-earth heroine. Tight riding breeches, beautiful horses, skilled riders, and foreign climes: what's not to enjoy?
