4.0 out of 5 stars Not an Ipad killer, but decent value for money, 26 Feb. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
OK, let's get this out at the start...if you want something with the performance & reliability of an Ipad, buy one, not one of these. For the money though, this is a viable tablet, albeit one with a few hang-ups. Widgets cannot be installed (other than the Google search one that it comes with) and the instruction book is useless, but if you google android 2.1 guide you can find something much better & download it as a PDF. Battery life isn't great and yes, the scrolling is a real pain, but it does improve with use. I had no problems with the strength of the wi-fi signal and the android market was a doddle to use. Web surfing was also fine, as was ebook reading & picture viewing. Bottom line is that (if you get a reliable one) it is a decent machine....just remember that the claims about it being the fastest, most powerful etc should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Incidentally, kudos to Androidslates for superb customer service.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great start, but then....., 13 Feb. 2011
The pilot for this series, and the first half hour in particular, is probably one of the most exciting & thought provoking things I have seen for some time. What do you do if you're in orbit & the Earth explodes?

But unfortunately, it's all downhill after that. The stories become repetetive & more and more unbelievable & Peter Weller overacts even more than Jack Nicholson on a bad day. I have criticised networks many times for cancelling shows that were excellent, but on this occasion the decision was correct.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT the father of Dexter, 18 Sept. 2010
A lot of people seem to take this as an early attempt at a Dexter-like anti hero, and indeed Jim Profit is certainly that in spades - he cheats, lies, kills all to further his corporate career. But where Michael C Hall's Dexter is a wonderful creation, Adrian Pasdar's Profit is simply unlikeable & unbelievable.

There are also so many gaps in the stories, with gaping holes in plot lines that simply don't make sense. Where exactly does he get the finances from to fulfill his schemes...or the technology...or the knowledge? And then there is the acting, which hardly ever transcends the wooden nature of the charachters themselves. And the costumes. And the sets....I could go on, but just thinking back about how bad this series is is making my head hurt!

I generally have a thing for series that were cancelled after just 1 season, or even mid way through that 1 season, and generally rant at this stage of a review that the studio executives who make such decisions are out of their minds. On this occasion though, they got it dead right!

1.0 out of 5 stars Does Not Live Up To The Hype, 18 Sept. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Like many people I was excited by this, having been led to expect a cross between The X Files & Indiana Jones.....& I guess if you have a single figure mental age you will probably be satisfied with that. Unfortunately, for anyone else this is a ludicrous mixture of bad acting, poorly scripted episodes with leaps of faith that defy imagination & charachters that are even harder to accept. Come on, are we really supposed to believe that a childish idiot is the best the US Secret Service has to offer? And don't get me started on the supposed "special" effects!

Bottom line, avoid at all costs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not your normal Star Gate, 16 July 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was really looking forward to this, after hugely enjoying SG1 & in particular Atlantis, but having just finished the final (cliffhanger) episode I am left with a very real sense of disappointment. In the extras, both Brad Wright & Robert C Cooper go out of their way to point out that this is a very different vehicle for the franchise, justifying the changes made with the comment that they own it so they can do whatever they want with it. Unfortunately, like many rock bands who produce an ego-fueled concept album that then fails spectacularly, I think what they want is rather a long way from what the majority of the fans want. One only has to look at the many, many articles on the net concerning SG-U to see that people are, on the whole, less than impressed. One comment which struck me particularly was, when suggesting how the last episode should be resolved, one author suggested killing all of the cast & starting over again.

This perhaps is the main failing with the show - the cast are simply uninteresting & unlikeable. Surely, when your main male lead (Robert Carlyle) is surly, untrustworthy & downright unpleasant there is something wrong with the imagining of the concept. As many of the other reviewers have noted, the story lines are also not exactly overly exciting....a slow build is all very well, but you need to have your audience still awake when the payoff finally comes. There is also an over reliance on cameo roles for Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks and Richard Dean Anderson, perhaps in an attempt to remind viewers that this is indeed Star Gate. To my mind though, particularly this early on in a show, such tactics simply undermine the new cast.

It is a real puzzle - the writers, producers & directors are on the whole the same as in previous incarnations, but the x-factor simply isn't there. I understand that the series has been picked up for a second season, and yes, I will more than likely watch it just to see if it is as bad as the first if for nothing else, but I really hope not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really, really good.....and scary too!, 20 Jun. 2010
I have been really impressed with this first season of Supernatural - generally first seasons are a bit hit & miss until things settle down in seasons two and three (assuming the show is picked up), but pretty much every episode here is worth watching. The storylines are good, there are some genuinely creepy moments and also some excellent humour - the reference to Paris Hilton when Sam and Dean were looking through a night vision scope made me laugh out loud! All this, plus a great car & some fantastic music (any show that plays Rush gets my vote).....what more could you want?

4.0 out of 5 stars A Maze, Built Upon a Maze, Inside A Maze., 25 May 2010
This review is from: Kidnapped - Season One [DVD] (DVD)
So, yet another excellent show that was cancelled after just one season, joining the likes of "Day Break", "Firefly", "Blade", "Moonlight" & "Blood Ties". Who makes these decisions, & why are they not locked up somewhere out of harm's way?
Anyway, rant over; on with the review. The title is actually a direct quote from one of the charachters & neatly sums up this intricate thriller. An obvious point of reference is the rather good Denzel Washington film "Man On Fire", but this is far more intricate & satisfying. Well acted & well told, the story rarely flags & builds to a satisfying conclusion, with an obvious lead on to what should have been season 2. Why only 4 stars then.....well, there is 1 really big continuity error mid way through concerning the weight of the ransom money & the ease with which it is removed from the back of a 4X4, but apart from that everything else was great. At the prices this is going for on both Amazon & Ebay, this is an absolute steal; go on, buy it - you will not be disappointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really, really disappointing, 28 Feb. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Basically Saving Grace minus Earl, this is another of the recent spate of cop shows with a "bad girl" as the central charachter. Unfortunately, the acting is one dimensional most of the time (the scene where Marshall & Stan dance is truly toe-curling - avoid the extended scene at all costs), the charachters are cardboard cutouts & Mary's mother and sister are seriously irritating. To be honest, I gave up after half a dozen episodes or so and recycled the set through Ebay, so I guess the show might improve later on, but I doubt it. At least Saving Grace had the benefit of the wonderful Everlast signature music - this series hasn't even got that going for it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great song, shame about the rest of the show, 28 Feb. 2010
I tried really hard to like this, but gave up in the end and recycled the set through Ebay. Each episode was fairly simplistic and I found pretty much all of the charachters unsypathetic & hard to like. By far the best part was the superb theme music & the DVD set includes the video by Everlast - if this wasn't also available on the far superior Burn Notice Season 1 set I would almost be tempted to say it's worth buying Saving Grace for this alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Getting Darker!, 8 Jan. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found Season 1 of Criminal Minds to be enjoyable if a little formulaic, but Season 2 is something of a different beast, with some really dark themes explored. Each of the Agents gets put through the wringer, none more so than Matthew Gray Gubler's Spencer Reid in the 2-parter "The Big Game/Revelations", but it is the episode "North Mammon" that really did it for me...one of the most astonishing pieces of television I have ever seen! Other stand out episodes are "Aftermath", "Legacy" and the two "Frank" shows, but I keep coming back to "North Mammon" time after time, with its' jaw-dropping conclusion.

I'm now looking forward to watching Season 3 & hope that this trend towards darker, more shocking storylines continues.
