The Klansman [DVD]
The Klansman [DVD]
Dvd ~ Lee Marvin
Offered by TwoRedSevens
Price: £4.49

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality for a poor film., 22 July 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Klansman [DVD] (DVD)
The picture quality is quite appalling on this Prism release - apart from the usual suspects such as fuzziness this one has the added disadvantage of severe colour distortion - red, orange, cyan - you choose the accurate description.
The subject matter warranted a more worthy film - Marvin is his usual dependable self but an inebriated Burton is rather pathetic who, due to his very distinctive Welsh accent, is sorely miscast - his inadequate Southern accent has been compared to Brando's English in Mutiny, which is ludicrous as Brando's portrayal of an English dandy is carried off to perfection.

The Naked City [Dual Format Blu-ray + DVD]

3.0 out of 5 stars Pointless Blue Ray and poor sound, 22 July 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Why oh why do they issue films on Blue Ray that have not been restored - it is like giving a ship a respray without bothering to remove the barnacles or the rust.
The print quality is quite acceptable but I would challenge anyone to know whether he was watching either the Blur Ray or the second DVD disc - there is no difference.
But the big disappointment is yet again the sound which is just as bad as in what I suspect is every other issue - two questions - 1: Can nothing be done to improve the sound of this fine and significant film and 2: Why do so few people in these columns comment on just how bad the sound really is.
Three stars are due to the sound - otherwise it is a five star movie.

The Strange Death of Europe: Immigration, Identity, Islam

5.0 out of 5 stars The future is dire., 1 Jun. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have just finished reading this book and was pleasantly surprised to see that I had managed to get to the end without committing suicide. Matthew Parris is wrong to say that Murray is anywhere wrong: he is correct in every thoroughly researched detail. Having spent a lifetime being incredulous at how stupid the Liberal Left can be and also how unprincipled our politicians are in failing to address this issue lest it harm their careers: leave it to another generation one can hear them say.
We live in a democracy whereby the demographics determine that one day Muslims will be in a majority - this may or may not be a bad thing and is probably a debate to be had: what one can be fairly certain of, however, is that the Islamic extremists will not miss the opportunity to take power albeit stealthily at first. When that happens, the good Muslims will be as terrified and impotent to confront them as were the good Germans able to confront the Nazis: when that time comes their aim of an Islamic Europe (let us not be provincial) will be implemented and the scene will be set for the next Holocaust. Fanciful? Maybe - but imagine having asked someone in the 19th century to predict how things might turn out in the 20th. Grandchildren anyone?!

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful in every way., 4 May 2017

A masterful performance - the playwright is pretty good too. This newly restored transfer is superb. I would not have the temerity to comment on this magnificent cast - I leave that to persons less humble than myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine film - appalling transfer., 4 May 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The stars are for the film - a superb example of early film noir. This transfer, though, is a disgrace and merits minus five stars. I returned mine as I considered it unwatchable - there are levels that one can get used to but this is beyond redemption.

Stanley Kubrick 3 Film Collection [DVD] [1955]
Stanley Kubrick 3 Film Collection [DVD] [1955]
Dvd ~ Sterling Hayden
Price: £8.00

5.0 out of 5 stars A steal if you have none of them., 4 May 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This set contains Kubrick's second, third and fourth films. The second (Killers Kiss) is OK but certainly nothing special. The third (The Killing) shows an enormous advance in every department of film craft and is a very fine film. The fourth (Paths Of Glory) is, in my view, Kubrick's finest film - he never did anything better concerning the human condition although later films were impressive in many ways including technical accomplishment. Paths Of Glory is one of the masterpieces of American film.
If you do not have any of these films then this is a steal - one is a masterpiece, one is a very fine film and the earliest certainly has many interesting moments, especially as it is early Kubrick: as a completist I bought this set simply to get the earliest film - the other two I have had for many years.

Replacement Remote Control For DIGITAL STREAM DHR8203U
Replacement Remote Control For DIGITAL STREAM DHR8203U
Offered by cherrypickelectronics
Price: £11.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A well desiged and reliable remote., 4 May 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This remote is an improvement in design on its predecessor with buttons that are far easier to use without pressing an adjacent one in error - and we all know how irritating that can be. The product is well designed and totally reliable - what more can one say about a remote? - after all, it's not as if it stars Marlon Brando!

Too Late for Tears Dual Format Blu-ray + DVD
Too Late for Tears Dual Format Blu-ray + DVD
Dvd ~ Lizabeth Scott
Price: £14.97

4.0 out of 5 stars Too wide a dynamic range., 22 April 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is of the generally fine blue ray restoration of this excellent film which features maybe Lizabeth Scott's finest performance. I do, though, have a criticism of the sound in this edition: the dynamic range is too wide. When you have the volume at a reasonable level to hear the voices, then either the music or police cars with their sirens wailing is far too loud. Too much dynamic range took away some of the pleasure of watching this old favourite in its restored version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great films but poor presentation., 4 April 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have just received this set and so have not watched the movies yet: I know them all very well and they are very fine films. Missing are the first five films that Kubrick directed - Fear and Desire (poor), Killer's Kiss (OK), The Killing (Superb - quantum leap in artistry), Paths of Glory (A masterpiece and, in my view, his finest film) & Spartacus (Probably the best of the historical epics with a superb cast and although a very fine film, hardly echt Kubrick). The eight films to follow complete Kubrick's oeuvre and really need no comment from me.
So why am I bothering to write a review? Well. there is more to a product than content and although I seem to be in a minority of one I feel I must comment on what I consider to be the very poor presentation. To start with, neither the DVDs nor the book would fit comfortably on shelving along side others - this is an irritant when it come to where one is actually going to store the thing. More annoying is the way the DVDs are held within the box - the ones in the middle seem to me to be difficult to remove whilst the four discs at the two ends fail to remain in place.
A standard box containing the eight films plus the two bonus discs in slim cases would have been preferable: I can see, from the layout of the book, that the same fitting format would not have been ideal and probably dictated this inconvenient format - one could still have included the book in an outer box with the CD box removable for placing on the shelf.
I await the brickbats among which, no doubt, the accusation of pedantry will be included.

The Acid House [DVD]

1.0 out of 5 stars Shock proof., 14 Feb. 2017
This review is from: The Acid House [DVD] (DVD)
When one cannot be shocked anymore - and, seriously, who can - all that is left is boredom. I feel sorry for a generation that can no longer shock people - it's like those weird haircuts where no one stares.
