Much as I have respect, for Naxos and JoAnn Faletta....this has been the 'real deal' for many years now...

1.0 out of 5 stars Style over substance, 16 April 2009
This review is from: X&Y (Audio CD)
Chris martin is not...an 'Artist'.. Everything he writes, he has one eye on the main stage at Glastonbury at 10.30 on the Sat night. CRAP lyrics...'Take a picture, something you see............In the future, where will I be'....WHAT?!?! Plus his strained, weedy falsetto voice. How you could hold your cigerette lighter up to this 'sub'-U2 nonsense, is beyond me. Like OASIS, it reminds me of a Nazi Nuremberg rally.....one hundred thousand people swept up in the emotion/hysteria of the event, without stoppoing once to question the validity of what they were involved in?!

5.0 out of 5 stars 'The Best'...., 16 April 2009
Yeah....though Karajan's Boheme suffers from some extremely self-indulgent tempi, this set hits the spot. The Vienna Philharmonic are truly a force to be reckoned with. Have just, today, bought the EMI/Pappano/Giorgiou set (as I was worried about the EMI executives' pensions!), but am sure this will be the top recommendation (Karajan) for decades to come.

2.0 out of 5 stars TOO much 'Mike Leigh', 30 Nov. 2008

This review is from: All Or Nothing [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
Sorry, but much as i bow down to the masterpieces that are 'Secrets and Lies's and 'Naked', this is a 'Mike Leigh' too far...On the 'plus'side, you get to see Sally Hawkin's magnificent legs (in a denim mini-skirt)after the mistake that was 'Happy Go Lucky', but this film is TOO relentlessly bleak and risks dangerously overexposing the 'great' Timothy Spalls' talents, used to such devestating effect in 'Secrets..' and 'Life is Sweet' (average film, but saved by the restaurant scenes with 'Aubrey')

5.0 out of 5 stars Late, lamented Bryden Thompson, 30 Nov. 2008
Since hearing this on the squeezebox, always rated this. 'Know we've recently lost both Vernon Handley AND Richard Hickox, but always felt Bryden wasn't given full credit for his performances. Heard he 'liked a drink' (but who doesn't!!). PLUS, cover sleeves by JMW Turner, what more could you want. There are no really BAD RVW cycles, but apart from those who can't live with Chandos' recording ethos..these are as good as any. By the way, for those interested, 'shell' out about £12,on Amazon, for a sensational box set of the Martinu symphonies with BT, you won't be dissappointed.
