Fantastic latest offering from the accomplished masters of the UK folk rock scene, 15 Mar. 2014
This is a fantastic latest offering from the accomplished masters of the UK folk rock scene. The award winning collaboration with June Tabor that produced the magical "Ragged Kindom" of 2011 was never going to be easy to follow, especially compounded by the departure of bassist and cellist Chopper last year. However, producer Al Scott steps very competently into the role of bass and presumably contributes his song writing much to the credit of the end result.
This album really grows on you, from the gorgeous opening harmonies of "Clown's Heart" to the nostalgic "Like a Swimmer in the Ocean" I was increasingly hooked after a couple of listens. And do listed hard and you will be rewarded as there are some lyrical gems here: "All I ever did was play, I troubadoured my life away" and "Like the ghost of Gary Cooper: checks his guns in at the door". The choruses are generally very catchy, and beautifully sung, without compromising on lyrical or musical integrity, and showcase these true songsmiths at their best. I can't wait to catch these guys deliver this live!
