5.0 out of 5 stars New approach to medical student training., 19 Jan. 2012
I have to confess that I contributed a very small amount to this publication, so my review may not be entirely unbiased!

This book is certainly worth a look if you are a medical student wishing to improve your clinical skills. It provides a novel approach to mastering this complex material.

It breaks down the clinical topics into clinical skills, examination, emergency management and common presentations, and provides excellent templates that you can use to test yourself or your clinical partner. There is a neat summary of each topic which makes grasping the essentials much easier than weighty, more detailed reference books. The concept provides a framework for your revision, and you can use the book as you see patients on the wards to ensure you cover the key points. The focus is on thinking of how you would manage the patient in the early, intermediate and later stages with advice on history & examination, investigations, differentials and management.

The book is very comprehensive, covering practical skills such as cannulation and ABG, as well as core clinical topics including history taking and basic examination. There is an excellent section on emergencies and common presentations that really gets to the heart of what you need to know.

I thoroughly suggest you take a look inside the book and see if it is for you.

Once you buy it, you can access the test templates online for free. Extremely useful for finals revision!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - but all those typing errors!, 8 Jan. 2008
This is a great book, very readable and full of good content. If only the publishers had bothered to proof read it - just so many typos (at one point they even write former instead of latter!).

Having said this, the book is excellent and I'd still give it 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 10 Sept. 2007
I love this book. It is concise, detailed and up to date. While it might not cover everything, it is beautifully written and easy to read. Coupled with Surgical Talk (which is also great but full of typos) the busy finalist will be well prepared for exam time. One aspect I found especially helpful was the footnotes naming the people behind eponymous syndromes - by understanding who they were, it helps me to remember more about "their" condition. I suggest you check this book out at your uni library before buying to make sure it's for you. Mine is now full of anotations, and I keep referring back to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just buy it!, 7 July 2007
Like other reviewers, I have listened to these stories since I was a child, when my parents bought them on cassette for long car journeys. They had to buy them all again, since we wore out the tapes listening to them so much! Now they are available on CD I have bought them yet again. The stories are beautifully read by Sir Micheal Horden, and the music is a wonderful accompanyment to his voice. The music includes Bach and Beethoven, as well as original music composed by Marisa Robles for the series.

If you are a Narnia purist you may not like these versions, but for me they remain some of the best spoken word productions I have ever heard. Buy them for young children, and they will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent as both an examination guide and a source of clinical information, 26 Nov. 2006
This is a very good book. It contains in depth information on all the basic clinical examinations (history taking, respiratory, cardio, neuro etc.) as well as miscellaneous chapters such as "On the Spot Diagnoses", "Chest X-ray", "Finals" and the superb section on the ECG.

The layout is very well thought out. Each chapter begins with detailed reviews of all the relevant symptoms and their causes. It then outlines the examination process as a list (invaluable for revising the day before!) before going through each point in considerable detail.

The colour photographs are brilliant, and really aid the student in understanding and memorising the examination process, and the appearance of common signs.

All in all an excellent book for medical students in their first and second years. Much better than any other clinical skills book I've used. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars One of the best loved books in the genre???, 2 Feb. 2006
Not sure that the above statement really applies. I read the Gollanz SF version and didn't think much of it - it's a reasonable story, but not really a classic. Plenty of other stuff out there.
You may well enjoy the novel, which does feature some interesting ideas and well written passages, but not sure it deserves to be in the Masterworks series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful filmwork and a moving story, 23 Aug. 2004
I've just finished watching this film for the first time. I loved it! As a diver and sailor, I really enjoyed Besson's portrayal of a man caught between the two worlds of land and sea, and the filmwork is superb. The original ending seems infinitely superior to the tacky US 'happy' version.
The story becomes even more tragic when you know that the real life Jacques Mayol committed suicide recently, at the age of 74, after suffering from depression. He was a great diver, and a real inspiration to many who free dive today. If you haven't seen the film, and have a passion for the water, watch it as soon as you can!

4.0 out of 5 stars Tongue in Cheek, but very good fun, 13 May 2004
For sheer novelty value this is a great CD. Just don't take it too seriously. The big band arrangements are really good, and Pat Boon sings all the tracks well. Our soul band use it for the interval music and it always goes down well. Lighthearted and easy listening, with some very funny moments too. Listen before you buy, but I can thoroughly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous movie, 7 Nov. 2003
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having been an Eastwood fan for many years, I was overjoyed to see this film finally released on DVD. It is without doubt one of his greatest films, although Jeff Bridges steals the show, and received an Oscar nomination - in his first appearance!
The story is of the friendship between two very different characters, the old and seasoned veteran Eastwood, and the wild and irresponsable Bridges, who meet while Eastwood is escaping assasination by an old friend of Eastwood's, George Kennedy. Eventually they all get together to take on Montana Armoured Bank, with mixed results.
There's nothing new in the story or plot of this film, and admittedly it looks a little dated now, but the filmwork is outstanding, and Bridges shines. Coupled with a little action and a tragic ending, this film is truely wonderful!

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking read!, 3 Jun. 2003
This review is from: A Tale of Time City (Paperback)
This excellent book was one of the first fantasy novels I read as a child, and introduced me to the genre. All her books are wildly imaginitive and never patronise. The writing is accessible and the plot lines keep you thinking - wonderful.
