This is an excellent movie and I really enjoyed it. If you ever wondered how these stock selling scams work then this movie will give you a great insight into the process. It's worth the purchase price for that alone. Next time someone phones you with a once in a lifetime stock purchase offer you'll be better placed to keep repeating "I'm not interested!" until the stock jock gets fed up and moves on to some other mug. I can recommend this movie very highly.

Facebook Marketing For Serious Beginners: Tips and Tricks on How to Make Your Business Grow With the Help of Social Media
Facebook Marketing For Serious Beginners: Tips and Tricks on How to Make Your Business Grow With the Help of Social Media

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what the ‘serious beginner’ is likely to need, 29 Oct. 2015
Social media has become a powerful tool for marketing professionals to reach out and build relationships with customers. In particular most companies now, especially large, multi-national companies, recognise the importance of having a company Facebook page and will have one as an integral part of their marketing activities. Large multi-national companies will have skilled staff and/or a PR agency to deal with this activity for them, of course. Small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SME) are much more likely to have someone managing this activity who is a ‘Jack-of-all-trades’ but not necessarily a master of the art. If you are such a person then you might be researching the things you need to know in order to do your job properly and you might be looking for books of the subject to help you. If so, the question you will ask yourself here is whether this book will provide you with the answers you need? Will it provide you with a comprehensive handbook into which you can dip as and when necessary?

The cover suggests that this book is for ‘serious beginners’, i.e. people who have some experience of Facebook at a personal level but not in terms of harnessing its power for business purposes. If you are someone who knows little about the subject in a business context then I think you will be looking for a text that offers simple explanations which are clear and easy to understand. Yes? So, is this the right book for you?

I say book but actually it’s more of a briefing note or essay. It is short but then at a UK price of 99pence, it is not expensive and the value it offers has to be considered in relation to that cost. You get what you pay for, as the old saying goes.

My first observation would be that, as a read, it is unclear, the explanations are not simple and it is not well written. It has the feel of a document written in English by someone for whom English is not their mother tongue. There is nothing wrong with that of course, other than in such circumstances one would normally expect the author to have arranged for it to have been edited by a professional editor to correct any grammatical errors, mistakes, inconsistencies, et cetera. It is clear to me that this did not happen here.

Overall it is a bit confusing to read and there are some obvious mistakes in the text. And of course the minute you see one mistake it makes you wonder about the accuracy or otherwise of everything else. Mistakes always undermine the reader’s confidence in the content. Essentially it all felt a bit sloppy to me.

There are inconsistencies too. For instance it suggests that achieving 8,200 page views a day is not something of which the reader should be afraid. Perhaps so, but it is realistically achievable for a SME in the early years of operation? I think not. There will be plenty of websites and Facebook pages that can achieve that many views but they will be the big hitters like the BBC, CNN, Apple, Coca Cola, et cetera. They will achieve many more than that but SMEs would struggle to get anywhere near those numbers.

So if the target audience of this book is ‘serious beginners’ how are the numbers consistent with that idea? The simple answer is, they are not. So I have to say, the impression I got here is that the book is unsure about its target audience.

Overall this book feels a little too brief, disjointed and the text doesn’t flow well. This makes it hard to read and it would also benefit from a few diagrams.

Nevertheless, as I implied earlier, the issue really is whether it is worth its price tag?

Certainly within the text there are plenty of nuggets of useful information. In fact I think there are enough useful observations to make this book worth the asking price. Let’s face it you don’t get a lot for 99pence these days.

However my concern would be that the ‘serious beginner’ wouldn’t have sufficient background knowledge to read around the aforementioned negatives and extract the nuggets of gold. They are there but I think the ‘serious beginner’ might struggle to appreciate them all fully.

If you plan to read a number of books and texts as part of your research on the subject then go ahead and buy this book. It’s cheap enough and you’ve nothing to lose. It offers a few of the answers but nowhere near all of them. If you’re looking for a comprehensive guide to the subject then this is not it, so you’ll need to look elsewhere.

Start a Successful Blog: Turn Your Hobby Into Business
Start a Successful Blog: Turn Your Hobby Into Business
Price: £0.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful observations for the 'would be' blogger, 28 Oct. 2015
So you fancy setting up your own blog, right? It’s an easy way to make a little extra money you think? Certainly it can be fun. However there are literally millions of blogs out there on the internet and few of them will be making any real money. That said there are some bloggers who are managing to make a living from their efforts. So what’s their secret? Good question! You should find the answer before you start. To quote Benjamin Franklin, “No one but a blockhead writes for anything other than money.”

The good news is that there are plenty of good books out there that will help you. So if you’re thinking of starting a blog then you need to read a few of them and do a little research before you start, if you’re to have any chance of being successful at blogging.

Which brings me to this book, is it one of the books you should read? I say book but to be honest in terms of length this book is more like a briefing note or essay. However though it is relatively short, it does offer the reader value and I think it is a book you should consider reading as part of your wider research on the subject before you start.

If you’re looking for a detailed guide on how to create a website then this is not it. You will not find any instructions on how to build a WordPress-based website in this book. Nor is it intended to be a comprehensive handbook on all you need to know.

However what it does offer is common sense advice that is well worth the price tag. You won’t find all the answers here but you will find some very useful observations nevertheless. Observations that will save you a little heartache and help you hit the ground running. Observations on matters like, choosing a topic; choosing a webhost; choosing a name; attracting readers; monetization; and legal considerations. These are all very important. The advice given in this book will help you formulate an approach to blogging that can lead you to success. In this case I would define success as being able to derive an income from your blog. I stress again, it doesn’t offer all the answers but it does offer value and I can recommend it.

It’s a quick and easy read and very useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling account of the life of a living legend, 30 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I’ve never met Eric Clapton but whenever I’ve seen him interviewed, he always seems like a very likeable guy to me. He’s also an incredible guitar player and I am a fan of his music. So I was keen to read this book to get a better appreciation of the man himself. Well obviously he’s a rock star, so you’d expect self-centred tales of sex, drugs, booze and life on the road. And essentially that’s what you get here. However it is actually a compelling, down-to-earth and very honest account of his life and his struggles with addictions. Well addictions or obsessions depending on your point of view. Eric is no saint and he doesn’t claim to be otherwise. He’s made mistakes and done things of which he is not proud now. Nevertheless he puts his hand up, takes responsibility and at least he seems to have learned from his mistakes. And that’s what I liked most about this book. An autobiography is always better when the subject is able to put their experiences into context and express the lessons they’ve learned. He’s had good times and bad; he’s enjoyed success and he’s suffered misfortune, particularly the sad death of his son Conor. However at no time does he wallow in self-pity. In fact he manages to remain philosophical throughout. Despite his setbacks he has sustained a level of success that few could match. He remains highly respected for his music and his back catalogue and yet he’s also managed to remain a fairly well-grounded individual, or so it would seem. By the end of the book I still found him a very likeable individual. He seems like the type of guy who’d make a very good friend. And I suspect that is why he remains popular as a musician and retains the respect of his peers and everyone who knows him. If you enjoy autobiographies and you’re interested in understanding what drives successful people then this book is a good read. Even if you’re just a fan of rock music this book is worth the effort. Certainly I enjoyed it and I can recommend it.
