Sabriel: Book one in the internationally bestselling fantasy series (The Old Kingdom 1)
Sabriel: Book one in the internationally bestselling fantasy series (The Old Kingdom 1)
Price: £2.48

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book, 14 Jun. 2014
Sabriel is an excellent fantasy book which departs from the typical fantasy fair! Some elements are reminiscent of modern fantasy like Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series or Brent Weeks Way of Shadows - particularly regarding the unique form and place of magic in The Old Kingdom - but never becoming bogged down in the particulars, or feeling the need to hold the reader by the hand. It also remains a very comfortable read for young readers - even though I was only 12 years old on first reading, I never felt left behind or overwhelmed, or talked down upon. The titular Sabriel is a somewhat naive but relatable protagonist, and her companions (particularly the incredible Mogget) bring an air of enigma and mystery which keeps the reader guessing right to the end of the story. Add in the truly aberrant villain and Sabriel is both a chilling and compelling read!
I would highly recommend this book for any fans of the genre - particularly fantasy books with more 'human' concerns and easy accessibility.

5.0 out of 5 stars What is even happening?, 10 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This show is amazing! I bought it having heard very positive reviews from people who normally would not watch anime or read manga - if you're simply a sci-fi or fantasy consumer, you will easily follow and enjoy the plot, knowing nothing about usual anime tropes.

The series acts essentially as a 'deconstruction' of the 'Magical Girl' genre - taking something usually quite simplistic and childish (not to criticize; childish does not always equal bad) and exploring it in a more mature and in-depth manner. As a result, the plot will twist and turn in unexpected ways - and yet never without making sense, or being a logical progression.

Extremely well plotted and gripping right to the end, the only criticism I have of this series is that it's slow to start - the first episode is (upon first viewing) probably the weakest of the entire series, and it's not until episode 3 that things really come into their own. However - upon rewatching (once you know enough to appreciate the myriad of foreshadowing throughout the early episodes) you will definitely understand and appreciate even these weaker episodes!

An absolute must-see for any fan of sci-fi, fantasy, anime, and quirky, mature, deconstructive story-telling!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not her most accessible album, but a good one!, 10 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you're a fan of Amanda Palmer or the Dresden Dolls, then this album really needs no description - and if you're not... well if punk rock cabaret, piano-mashing, raw-emotional, Honest music sounds good to you, then they're definitely worth a listen!

That being said, the following album, 'Theater is Evil' is probably a more accessible record - the tracks on this album swing back and forth between rocky and energetic, and slower more somber pieces, leading to a little bit of mood-whiplash on some occasions.

Still, well worth the listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracked my Dad up anyway!, 10 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I got an engraved silver plectrum as a retirement present for my (guitar mad) father, and it was definitely worth it!

The plectrum arrived in under a week, in a beautiful little box, gorgeously polished and the engraving work was perfect.
My message was perfectly spelled and legible.

A beautiful little item, and an excellent gift for anyone musically inclined!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7-inch - (Golden Brown, Wi-Fi)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7-inch - (Golden Brown, Wi-Fi)

5.0 out of 5 stars Very functional, 10 April 2014
I bought this as a 'starter' tab for my partner - neither of us having owned a tablet before, and in the weeks since receiving it, she has completely stopped using her laptop! It works smoothly and intuitively.

There are occasional issues with lag, when performing larger tasks like watching netflix or using google-hangouts, but even so, not enough for this to be anything more than a nit-pick of a complaint.

Not sure how it holds up against other tablets, but for its price and its easy-use, it's definitely a good purchase for a first-time user, if not for veterans also!
