4.0 out of 5 stars sometimes funny and sometimes touching observations about human nature, 16 Jan. 2017

Despite the occasional preposterous plot device, Agatha Christie's Mary Westmacott novels contain some astute, sometimes funny and sometimes touching observations about human nature.

Mussorgsky Dis-Covered
Mussorgsky Dis-Covered
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning reinterpretations of Mussorgsky's songs, 26 Dec. 2016
I rushed to buy this after hearing the song 'Gopak' played on BBC Radio 3. I'm generally wary of modern reinterpretations of classical music but these are outstanding. They have all the spirit and atmosphere of the originals but make something entirely new and thrilling out of them. Elisabeth Kulman's voice is beautiful, expressive and full of colour and the arrangements (with elements of jazz, klezmer and other non-classical styles) stunning.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have read in ages, 9 Oct. 2016
This review is from: The Godwits Fly (117) (Paperback)
One of the best books I have read in ages. Makes me think of Jean Rhys's advice to Diana Athill about writing: 'Tell it as it is'.

The Meaning of Madness, second edition

2.0 out of 5 stars Textual overlap with The Art of Failure, 8 Aug. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this after reading Neel Burton's The Art of Failure. Quite a lot of material is duplicated in these books, as if simply cut and pasted from one to the other. A shame, as he has some interesting things to say.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed, 19 May 2015

I agree with the two-star reviewer. This product does not smell of orange flowers - it has a faint, unpleasant 'off' smell.

These seem quite robust and have the cup sizes and ml equivalents engraved on the bottom of each measuring cup. You can take the connecting ring off very easily if you want to use the cups separately.

This review is from: The Luminaries (Paperback)
" 'You tell me any old rubbish you like, and if you string it out until we reach the junction at Kumara, then I shall count it as a very fine tale.' " (The Luminaries, page 713).
Clearly the Man Booker Prize judges felt the same way.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful and evocative, 4 April 2013

This review is from: We Can Be Heroes (Hardcover)
Sadly I was a little too young and too shy to go to the London clubs of the early 80s but I loved the music and fashion. This is the next best thing to having been part of the scene, so packed is it with memorabilia (photos, interviews, posters, flyers, even DJs' set lists). The production quality is superb, too.
