4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant but flawed, 3 Jun. 2017

An excellent, thought provoking and entertaining book. It may be that his faith in the rate of technological change and its impact on us is over blown (faith is the appropriate word?). AI, at least to date, is just not bright enough. He sites algorithms such as Amazon's recommendations based on what you've bought to date as examples of modern AI. I looked through them just now and no, nothing I want. Ditto on Netflix - they recommend a film base on what I've been watching and again, no, not interested. Perhaps they'll get better and we will all be slaves to the machine world. But not yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality product and tough, 29 Oct. 2016

Surprisingly tough. In use for a year now for a 6 kilo Podengo who is a very keen squirrel hunter. Replacing it only because it can't last forever. Very reliable, easy to use if you have a strong grip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book of the year for me, 6 Oct. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A wonderful and very often moving synthesis of our knowledge about human ingenuity in the time before writing and metallurgy. He carefully balances evidence and opinion without dogma, a true scientific approach... and yet the romance of a human (and our animal companions') story comes across powerfully.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just a bit too glib, 4 Sept. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Journalistic writing on the world of ideas can be fascinating, when done well. This book did not achieve that and I put it aside in favour of more serious and well thought out works. More originality and less about Elon Musk would have been good.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not understand evolution, 3 July 2016
Displays a fundamental misunderstanding of how evolution works, betrayed by the common use of the word 'undirected'. Whether this is deliberate or not is harder to tell. Evolution is variation (undirected) plus selection (directed). This alone is enough to explain the origin and complexity of life on Earth.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have just one cookbook, make sure it's this one, 25 May 2016
This superb book deserves more attention in these days of over-complex recipes (yes, I'm pointing at you, Yotam). Simple, seasonal, delicious and imaginative recipes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sub Optimal, 16 Jan. 2016

Stilted dialogue, poor characterisation, a Clive Cussler plot without the excitement. I tried but gave up less than half way through without being bothered to leap ahead to see how it ends. Not my Star Trek.

This review is from: Brat Farrar (Kindle Edition)
A lovely, intimate, moving novel. Not exactly a detective story and not exactly literary fiction, but falling somewhere between. A page turner and a feast of brilliant character creation and dialogue. A novel about kindness, family.. and murder most foul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 1 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Josephine Tey's masterpiece. A short, funny, erudite and moving story set in one room with a badly injured police inspector casting around for something interesting to do. A photo of a painting of Richard III comes to hand and he's off, applying psychology and police nous to clearing the 400 year dead king of the commonly believed calumny that he murdered his nephews. And also he finds the real villain...

1.0 out of 5 stars A dull companion to his best, 17 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The plot is tedious, the actions and motives of the main characters unconvincing. Frankly, one of the rare books I could not be bothered to finish. I've enjoyed him at his imaginative best. This is not it.
