You are told all the way through that the theme Meg (main character) is aiming for, is the story-less novel, which I assume is reflected in the overall style of the novel, nevertheless it is a compelling read, a feat in itself. Then days afterwards I'm still thinking about the events in the book and then it occurs that much is left unsaid about the beast and Megs potential magical powers, which allows the reader to draw their own conclusions. Scarlett Thomas always provides an intelligent read.
