5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent toothbrush, 21 Aug. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I've been using Oral B electric toothbrushes for over a decade. When I was offered this, I jumped at the chance to try out a top-of-the-range brush to see how it differed from the mid-range (4000 series) ones I generally use.

So, what do you get in addition to a mid-range brush?:

* The handle looks much nicer. It feels smoother than the 4000 series one and the front bit is silver rather than blue.
* The handle has an extra button for switching between modes. This is so much more convenient than using the power button as you can switch the toothbrush off without having to go through all the modes. The front of the toothbrush also has a display which shows you which brushing mode you are currently in (regular, sensitive, whitening etc).
* It shows you the battery charging with 3 lights rather than 1, so you have more of an idea how close to fully charged it
* The light which comes on if you are pressing too hard with the brush goes all the way around the top of the brush, not just the back, so is harder to miss.
* The travel case is great
* There is an accessory for securely attaching your smartphone to the wall whilst brushing your teeth, to more easily make full use of the brushing app.
* The handle is slightly taller and thicker through the whole stem, to allow for a bigger battery than the lower range brushes.

What's the same as the Oral B Smart 4000 range?:

* Great toothbrush
* 4 different brushing modes
* 30 second short vibrations and 2 minutes longer vibration to signal when to switch focus or stop brushing
* Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone app

Whether or not the additional features and elegance are worth the extra cost (about £160 over the 4900 dual handle pack at time of writing), only you can decide. The 4900 set will do a very similar job, and the additional features are 'nice to have' rather than essential. But it's a great toothbrush, and on a 'cost per use' basis for something you use twice a day, it might be worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lego is so good!, 16 Aug. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Lego has gotten very sophisticated since I was young. Even the sets you could buy were suggestive more than anything else. This isn't the most exciting themed lego set you could get, but my word you get a lot for your money. I've just spent the past few hours happily building up the set, enjoying the tactility of the experience and appreciating, all these years since my childhood, the love and attention that goes into the pack. It's a huge box that produces a huge plane, and that plane is supported by a mini-village of vehicles and depots. It's just great, and while I can't justify spending a lot of time playing with lego at my age, I still think it's one of the greatest, most engaging, and most meaningfully educational toys you can put in front of a child.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and useful, 13 Aug. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I'm not great at networking, and as an academic it's something that's necessary for me at regular intervals, especially at conferences. I've never been comfortable around crowds, and while I'm happy presenting or lecturing I find one to one conversation more stressful. So, this is a great book for people that fall into that category. It's quick and easy to read, with actionable advice that can be leveraged in any situation where you're looking to make deeper, more profitable connections with people. It adopts a somewhat socially mercenary perspective in this, focusing on the overall transaction rather than on personally fulfilling connections, but you'll come away from reading this feeling more confident in getting the best out of professional networking opportunities.

3M Adjustable Foot Rest Sturdy Steel Black
3M Adjustable Foot Rest Sturdy Steel Black
Price: £88.97

4.0 out of 5 stars A fine foot-rest, 13 Aug. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
It's clearly a fine foot-rest - it has adjustable support, feels solid underfoot, and while it's not something you'd want to use in your bare-feet it's ideal for a working environment. You can orient it for maximum comfort, and even adjust the height (a little). It doesn't extend quite as high as I tend to prefer (I used a fabric foot-stoll previously, because I am fundamentally very lazy) but it's almost certainly going to be appropriate for 95% of the population. Very good, and well worth getting.

Elder Sign Board Game
Elder Sign Board Game

Price: £25.22

2.0 out of 5 stars Cthulhu themed Yahtzee, 12 Aug. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Elder Sign Board Game (Toy)
Do you like Yahtzee? Do you like (or fear) Cthulhu? Do you like fun?

I guess two out of three isn't bad.

Elder Sign is essentially a game of chucking dice and hoping you get the right numbers coming up. It's a game of funneled desperation where you must rate tasks to be completed against the tools (dice) you have available. In the end, every choice is one of simple probability - you make decisions all the way through the game, but very few of them count as *interesting* decisions. When you find yourself sucking on the fuzzy end of an eldritch lollipop of futile endeavour, you can't learn from the experience. You can just hope that next time, collectively, your team will roll the dice better. Ultimately, I find that inherently unsatisfying.

2.0 out of 5 stars A hugely missed opportunity, 12 Aug. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: One Zero One (Toy)
Whilst pretending to offer an interesting theme, this is a dull, workaday card game the offers neither creative expression nor meaningful immersion. It's a half-hearted game of area control, with broken scoring and half-hearted mechanics. Fundamentally, the problem with One Zero One is that it just isn't a lot of fun to play. It's got no meat on its bones. The card-play is okay, but there's nothing interesting you can do with the cards. There's no meaningful depth because you're entirely at the mercy of the draw and the limited options you have available. However, it's definitely in the vicinity of greatness, just trapped in a deep, deep hollow from which there is likely no mistake. It's not a bad idea, but it is poorly executed and riddled with systemic flaws that render it ultimately not worth playing.

Once Upon a Time Third Edition Card Game
Once Upon a Time Third Edition Card Game
Price: £17.50

5.0 out of 5 stars And they lived happily ever after, 8 Aug. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Once upon a time is an extremely clever game of collaborative story-telling, in which you and the other players around the table are attempting to cash in the narrative beats represented in their hands whilst simultaneously driving the story towards a conclusion that is unique to you. The problem is, every time your story intersects with the cards in an opponent's hand, they can take control of the storytelling and start driving the tale towards their own ending. It's fast, wickedly funny, astonishingly creative, and designed with such generosity of spirit that it can make you feel genuinely clever simply through playing.

Very highly recommended.

Lanterns: The Harvest Festival - Board Game - English
Lanterns: The Harvest Festival - Board Game - English
Offered by docsmagic
Price: £30.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth playing, 5 Aug. 2016
Lanterns is very simple, surprisingly deep, visually striking, and a masterpiece of elegant design. However, in accomplishing that quadfecta I suspect it has become too samey to become a timeless, enduring classic in the same way that Carcassonne or Ticket to Ride have managed, You won’t regret the time you spend playing it, but I wouldn’t expect it to become a regular fixture in your gaming schedule. At a nicely brisk 20-30 minutes playing time though it’s a nice filler, and something you could easily use to introduce tabletop gaming to your more hesitant friends.

Oral-B Pro 4900 Electric Rechargeable Toothbrush Powered by Braun - Black, Dual Handle Pack
Oral-B Pro 4900 Electric Rechargeable Toothbrush Powered by Braun - Black, Dual Handle Pack
Price: £122.86

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent toothbrush, just check the price against the Pro 4000 before purchasing, 26 July 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I've been using electric toothbrushes for over a decade, and have been using the Pro 4000 for the past couple of years. The Pro 4900 pack contains not one but two 4000 handles, one charging base, and a useful stand with a hard case to hold the second handle. Though this model doesn't come with a travel case, the hard case could work in that respect.

The toothbrush has 4 different modes. I usually just use it at standard speed daily clean, and it does an excellent job. It also has a sensitive mode which is useful, a whitening mode, and a gum care mode. It doesn't have Bluetooth, but I tried the Smart series 4000 model and didn't find the app was particularly beneficial for me. It's worth bearing in mind though if you were hoping for the app to track your brushing.

This is a fantastic toothbrush which does the job really well. I was really happy to get offered this, as the dual handles mean my other half can also use one. That only causes an issue if we both need to recharge our brushes at the same time, though both handles being the same colour means you have to use the coloured rings on the toothbrush heads to identify whose is whose. Having two handles of different colours would be more useful. If you're just getting it for one person though, having two handles is excellent for when you run out of battery power in one, as the other can be on the dock and fully charged, ready to save you from having to brush manually.

I would thoroughly recommend this electric toothbrush. Whether you purchase this model or opt for the Pro 4000 single pack or the smart series 4000 model comes down to convenience, price, and how keen you are on tracking apps.

If you just want a toothbrush that does an excellent job, get the Pro 4000, or the Pro 4900 if it works out cheaper than buying two Pro 4000 models. At the moment this is not the case on Amazon, but prices often change.
If you are happy to pay for the convenience of an extra handle and never having to deal with a flat battery, buy the Pro 4900 even if it does work out a bit more expensive than two Pro 4000 models: it's worth a few quid extra at least for the hard case to store the second handle.
If you are really keen on tracking your brushing activities (I wasn't) then it might be worth paying that bit extra for a smart series model with Bluetooth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent toothbrush, not sure about the app, 16 July 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I've been using electric toothbrushes for over a decade, and got this one as upgrade to the Pro 4000.

The toothbrush itself feels much the same as the Pro 4000, and has similar modes for sensitive teeth and whitening. My upper front incisors were rather sensitive when I started using the toothbrush, and I can confirm that, for me at least, the sensitive mode did a great job at handling this whilst still cleaning my teeth effectively. I switched to regular mode for the bottom teeth. I wouldn't recommend doing this mid-row as it re-sets the 30 second timer. I haven't used the whitening mode, but be aware that you need a different toothbrush head for that.

The toothbrush does an excellent job, but if you already have the Pro 4000 why upgrade? The main new feature is Bluetooth. This works with a free app and it can track your brushing: are you brushing your teeth consistently, for enough time? This could be great for getting kids excited about brushing their teeth well and tracking progress. The main problem I had was that it is hard to actually get and maintain a bluetooth connection to your phone, and the frustration of that somewhat takes away from the potential benefits.

This is a fantastic toothbrush which does the job really well. The only question is whether you want or need the bluetooth and app. If you have kids who will use the toothbrush, I think it is worthwhile having this feature. If you know you definitely won't use the bluetooth then save yourself a few quid and get the Pro 4000 instead.
