'Mad forest' by Caryl Churchill, 18 Nov. 2002
Mad forest is a new play by Caryl Churchill, set in Romania at the time of the fall of the dictator Chaucescu. The play centers on two extended families and their experiences under his tyrannical regime; which consisted of poor schooling, little electricity, no freedom of speech and removal of all the humanity. The play is written in Churchill's successful style, using conversation crossing, monologues, Romanian in parts and a general sense of wonder that this situation could still happen in our time. It is an excellent play to read or study particularly successful with Theatre Studies groups, when performed or read. Another ambitious and entirely moving play by this esteemed playwright. I highly recommend it.
