5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing, 1 Nov. 2010
This review is from: Match Point [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
If you have not seen this film, you are so lucky because you have a treat in store.
It is a most enjoyable tale of one man's undeserved lucky breaks. The analogy with tennis works very well...a series of lucky net cords, bad bounces, etc can win the game for a player, as can taking foolhardy risks. The difference between an ace and 'OUT!' is minimal. This guy's luck in life is phenomenal.

The acting is first class. (Watch out for Dennis Pennis as the sleazy estate agent in a tiny cameo role.)
The settings give us a satisfying escapist glimpse into the plush world of the very rich.
The operatic background music, especially the Caruso recordings, all works really well, except for the niggling question 'Where is the Covent Garden orchestra? Could they only afford a piano?'

This is a film which will keep your attention chained to the last second, when you are left wondering, like the main character "What happens now? Can the luck hold?"

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother: The Official Biography
Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother: The Official Biography

1.0 out of 5 stars Dry and unappetising, 31 Oct. 2010
This is a dry and unappetising account of a 100 years in the life of a woman whose life surely must have amounted to much more than these boring lists of what clothes she wore, which toff nonentities were present at which uneventful house party, how every monotonous hour was spent on a tour of Canada.

Anyone with access to the Royal Archives could have come up with the same humdrum catalogue. The book feels less like biography and more like copying out passages from sources.

I am still waiting for a BIOGRAPHY of the late Queen Mother.

3.0 out of 5 stars A very amusing book, 17 May 2010
A tongue-in-cheek present from a friend, this manual on etiquette lies around the house, causing hilarity when anyone picks it up to read a page out loud.
I defy anyone to read it and keep a straight face.
To make it more special, I suggest tracking down the old Coronation St episode in which Hilda Ogden has a soiree based on Cartland's recommendations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Legendary, 27 Dec. 2009
The whole of Gavin and Stacey, all three series plus the two Christms specials, will become legendary, like Fawlty Towers.
Like Fawlty, they are stopping at the top of their game (I wish the Royle family had done the same!)

Series three deepens the characters without losing any of the freshness or pace. Recurring jokes are cleverly handled so that they are never overdone. New characters (Smithy's catatonic mother, Gavin's daft office colleagues) fit in beautifully.

The latest Christmas episode is bravely, unseasonally and triumphantly set on the beach.

The main focus is on the characers of course, but with the odd crazy fleeting background moment, like the queue of Elvis look-alikes all wanting a cappucino.

And can I say word of praise for Bryn's shorts? Their elasticated, draw-string waist was so.....Uncle Bryn!

So if you want to know what's occurin' with this product, I can tell you it is lush.

4.0 out of 5 stars Madame Huppert certainly can act!, 3 Nov. 2009
This review is from: La Ceremonie [DVD] (DVD)
A story that grabs the attention, an excellent cast and Chabrol's deft direction.....how could you fault it?
Well, to be honest the American-ness of the original story pokes through quite a bit. I mean, French postal workers simply do not conduct themselves like the Huppert character. Quelle horreur!
Having said that, I have seen La Ceremomie more than once and will undoubtedly watch it again in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing, 3 Nov. 2009
This review is from: Notes on a Scandal (Paperback)
I picked up NOTES ON A SCANDAL casually in an idle moment and then realised I would not be able to put it down without reading right to the end.

The narrator is unreliable and hides certain things from us (and from herself) so it becomes detective story as the reader tries to piece together the truth.

If you enjoy having to think, rather than being led by the hand, then this is a novel you will enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly un-PC, 2 Nov. 2009
Highly entertaining, brave, unexpected, with a superb cast including Mark Gatiss and Ruth Jones in supporting roles.

Very watchable.

Just one note of caution:- series 2 is not in the same league and is best avoided.
