South African Air Force
South African Air Force
by Peter G. Dancey
Edition: Paperback
Price: £17.95

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book - sub-standard printing quality, 1 April 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is an excellent summary of the history of the South African Air Force. It covers the formation of the SAAF, through to the mid-2000's, along with photos of different aircraft. It includes lots of useful lists including the aircraft in SAAF museums, inventory of the SAAF in 2003/2004, and other very useful info.

However, the printing and quality of photos of the book are poor. The text looks like cheap laser printing. All the photos inside the book are B&W and of varied quality. Many of the photos look like there were scanned and/or printed on an inkjet printer. If these were of better quality, and in colour, this would be a significant addition to the history of this air force.

In summary - very useful history, but don't buy this book for the photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read, full of surprises and very hard to put down, 18 Mar. 2017
After reading two previous books by this author, I was looking forward to this new book. In my opinion, this is definitely the best one so far, with a mixture of murder mystery, witchcraft, the intelligence services and some esoteric physics, all wrapped into an excellent plot. There are so many twists and turns in the plot, it is very hard to stop reading. I particularly like the device used a few times in the book where you read about an incident, then the events leading up to it, and you are still surprised how it all turns out!

Buccaneer Boys: True Tales by those who Flew the 'Last all- British Bomber'
Buccaneer Boys: True Tales by those who Flew the 'Last all- British Bomber'
Price: £6.95

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent stories from the air crews of this excellent aircraft. Only let down by poor proof-reading on Kindle version, 5 Feb. 2016
This book has chapters written by different pilots and navigators for this excellent aircraft. Each chapter is full of stories and incidents that give you an idea what it was like to be part of the crew at that time. What is particularly good is the number of people who contributed their stories, and how those stories often overlap. Some of the chapters are written by US exchange crew, and even a few stories from the South African crews who flew these aircraft over Angola and Namibia.

One minor thing stops this being a 5 star book - the Kindle version has some strange mixed case which means many (but not all) of the names of people and places have lost the initial capital letters. Not a big problem, but clearly the Kindle version has not been properly proof-read. This makes picking out place names a bit more challenging.

Don't let the proof reading put you off the book, buy it anyway and hope a corrected version is issued soon on Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book to remember!, 12 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I stumbled across this book by accident - but it turned out to be a an excellent read. The book is about a journalist who started off writing a story about memory competitions, and ends up participating himself. In parallel, he looks at the history of memory techniques and medical studies of memory, and meets some of the people involved, including the doctors and patients with memory loss.

While this is not a book to learn about how to improve your own memory, it does explain different techniques, and there are loads of references to other books that do. I have told a few people about this book and I am sure they will enjoy it as much as I did.

Airfix A01015 De Havilland Tiger Moth 1:72 Scale Series 1 Plastic Model Kit
Airfix A01015 De Havilland Tiger Moth 1:72 Scale Series 1 Plastic Model Kit

1.0 out of 5 stars Been replaced by a completely new kit from Airfix - buy the new one instead, 9 Feb. 2014
This kit has been around for ages. There are not many Tiger Moth kits, but this one is now very long in the tooth. However, Airfix have just released a brand new version of this aircraft (Feb 2014), with completely new mould (new tooling) that has been getting good reviews, and is only £5.99 recommended retail price.

Don't buy this kit unless you are a collector. If you want to buy a kit to build - get the new version instead.

Dark Space (Book 2): The Invisible War
Dark Space (Book 2): The Invisible War
Price: £1.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sequel, 25 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really enjoyed the first book, and looked forward to reading the second. It would be hard to understand this book if you had not read the first, so definitely start at the beginning of the series.

I enjoyed the way it shifted between the multiple plot lines and characters - this keeps up the pace of the book and makes it an interesting read. I also thought the new characters helped expand the Dark Space universe. I also like the way that the technology seems appropriate and believable - no magic technology that just appears at random as a way to get out of a situation.

I would have liked to see some of the aspects expanded upon. Not wanting to give any plot away - certain telepathic abilities are very useful in the plot and would be very interesting areas to go into. It would have expanded the characters.

Looking forward to book 3 as this one ends too soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful replacements for MDR NC11, 19 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought these to replace a lost medium-size earbud on my Sony MDR NC11 headphones. The pack arrived quickly (ordered Sunday - arrived Tuesday am and includes the same 3 different sized pairs (S, M, L) I got from Sony when I bought the headphones.

The earbud seems identical to the original Sony part, and fits securely on to the earpiece. I don't notice the different between the original and replacement parts.

Much easier than buying brand new headphones as Sony do not appear to sell replacement earbuds for this older/discontinued set of headphones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ugly - but it works, 24 Dec. 2012

Needed a new dispenser and this works perfectly. Ugly, but functional with a good weight to it. It takes the standard-size small rolls of tape, just check it takes the right size for your needs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting idea, aimed at the teenage market perhaps., 24 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought this on a whim. A very interesting concept but perhaps I am not part of the right target audience. The focus was on teenage angst than a lot of the other areas that could have been covered by the book (and, I suspect, the rest of the series). For the right audience, I think this would be an enjoyable book, just not for me.

Britain's Greatest Aircraft
Britain's Greatest Aircraft
by Robert Jackson
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £25.00

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book - but random information in each chapter, 15 April 2012
A promising idea, and nice coverage of different aircraft types. However, in many sections (esp. the WWI aircraft) - each chapter is a selection of actions the aircraft was engaged in. Not a lot about the aircraft itself, the design and construction - more how it was used. This gets better later on in the book - if you manage to get past the first few chapters.
