5.0 out of 5 stars Great place to start your adventures into drawing, 10 Dec. 2015
I approached this book as a complete beginner who hadn't done any drawing since school . I'm still in the early stages of working through it but the book as a whole is well laid out, not too much text to get in the way and there are a variety of different exercises to work through which you can select from or adapt as you prefer. The emphasis is on finding small pockets of time to draw in , to draw what interests you, and to not worry about bad drawings! Jake is a lovely inspiring guide and I'd happily recommend this book to beginners as it's working for me. The book is pitched at being suitable for all levels of skills and includes drawing theory as well as a good guide to drawing materials to get you started.

5.0 out of 5 stars great, i bought two to store some bedding in ..., 19 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
great, i bought two to store some bedding in temporarily. The storage had to be pretty enough to have on view (these will live in my hallway for a few weeks). I fitted a standard thickness double duvet plus a velvet quilted duvet cover in one, in the other - 4 pillows, 2 scatter cushions and a double fitted sheet and a thin double mattress protector. When done they fold down to a small size . I was aware of some of the comments about zips and fragility so I just put the bedding in fairly carefully and had no mishaps. Would recommend .

1.0 out of 5 stars the most boring film i've ever seen, 2 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Aurora [DVD] (DVD)
I'm a real fan of indie and world movies and had high hopes for this but it was the most boring film ever . I'm so glad I got it from the library rather than having to buy it . I gave up on it and turned it off.

3.0 out of 5 stars not leather!, 4 Nov. 2013
I bought these based on the assumption that they were made of leather- as stated in product description, however I was very disappointed to see they are- according to the information actually on the boots themselves completely synthetic. Very very disappointed. The boots themselves fitted well and are comfy so i've decided to keep them but they were hardly a bargain. Buyer beware!

5.0 out of 5 stars so good I paid full price!, 21 Oct. 2013
This is the patisserie book i've been waiting for ! I saw it the day after it was published in my local bookshop and I had to buy it then and there for the weekend! I'm an experienced cake and pie baker but with very little Patisserie making experience.

The book is divided into sections starting with basic techniques : sweet shortcrust, sablee, savarin dough, genoise, creme patisserie, creme anglaise, brioche dough etc etc. Each is accompanied by simple instructions and lots of clear photos to help you understand. Then it moves into how to use those basics so chapter one is on sweet shortcrust pastry and includes: How to line a tart tin and how to bake blind and the recipes are apple and cinnamon tart, rhubarb tart, alsatian apple tart, parisian flan tart, blueberry and lemon tart. Other chapters are: sweet pastry, sablee pastry, puff pastry, choux pastry, rising doughs, flans, egg batters and creams, sponge cakes and sweet treats. They all include more how to's along with recipes.

I love that she has crammed in so many recipes, apart from an Opera cake I couldn't see anything obvious that was missing, plus there are lots of new ones to me. Her genoise is different from other recipes i have in that it does not include any butter which she doesn't comment upon, in other recipes she does say where she has changed a traditional method and sometimes discusses different methods- e.g in macaroons, I found this very helpful .So far i've only made the Basque custard pie which involved me making Creme patisserie for the first time and it was a big success. I'm sure i'll get plenty of use out of this book and I really like the way that it inspires you to try your own combinations due to the fact that the basics are used in several different ways in the book.

The only niggle I have is that i've noticed the odd typo, 200mlg double cream foxed me for a while (p.84), the Basque tart says in the recipe to bake for 30 minutes but at the top it says 40-50 minutes. I just hope there are not any serious mistakes.

I think Murielle has done a fantastic job with this book , it really includes just about everything i wanted and is a good workable size, not a huge tome as some specialised bakery books are.

3.0 out of 5 stars flawed, 30 Jan. 2013
lovely to look at and a great collection of recipes, including some unusual ones BUT i've been baking for over 30 years and the author has taken it upon herself to reinvent tried and tested techniques i've learnt in that time and that I know work. Her techniques may well work but i'm not going to risk wasting good ingredients in order to find out. Examples would be the chocolate mousse cake where everything ends up being 'whizzed' together just before baking and the original victoria sponge cake where she describes whisking in the flour and baking powder after having whisked the butter and sugar and eggs. I've made hundreds of Victoria sponge cakes using both the all in one method method and the traditional creaming method and with the latter method you carefully fold in the flour after having beaten together the butter and sugar and the eggs, this is in order to retain the beaten in air. Book is being returned to the library- shame as it looks wonderful but i just don't trust it.

4.0 out of 5 stars ok for a while, 20 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
i've had this for at least 3 years and couldn't fault it until now, however it needs replacing as the numbers have started falling off! Over time the dial becomes greasy and needs cleaning, water gets into the dial and when shook the numbers fell off. I won't but this one again but will still buy another cheap one as it did last a fair while- and is still usable.

3.0 out of 5 stars time consuming, 15 April 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Artful Cupcake (Hardcover)
i second what the previous reviewer has said and will add that although the book does have some quickly decorated cakes, the majority are very time consuming and fiddly. The layout puts me off as you often have to turn back and refer to the basic recipes at the start, its a small point but i do wonder if it is one reason i have yet to make any of the cakes (several months on), despite many of them looking very appealing. I am an avid baker and cake decorator so this book was a disappointment to me.

3.0 out of 5 stars depends on who its aimed at, 21 Mar. 2008
I borrowed this from my local library and i certainly wouldn't buy it, at least not unless far cheaper and in paperback. The problem is who is it aimed at? There are some basic decorating ideas but the book is not particualrly aimed at avid cake decorators, such as myself. The ideas and themes are very similar to many of those in 'Spectacular cakes' which i also have and very highly rate. This book contains many recipes for cakes, those i tried are delicious. It is well laid out and has helpful information such as storage instructions and there are photographs for each cake. The book is divided into chapters, decorated delights are individual cakes, the coconut butterflies are unusual and did appeal to me. Then small party cakes, including a cherry blossom design, little venice lace and some children's cakes and christmas which are decidedly average. The section on delicious treats focuses on receipes for cakes which need little (if any) decorations, and delicious they were, eg lime and coconut, bananna butterscotch, sticky date, almond and chocolate. Fluffy desserts are cheesecakes, meringues and roulades and there is a small cookies and pastries section. The book ends with a clear techniques section and the templates. Maybe a good book for a beginner or just someone who wants some pretty cakes for a celebration.
