The Flame Trees of Thika: The Complete Series [DVD]
The Flame Trees of Thika: The Complete Series [DVD]
Dvd ~ Hayley Mills
Price: £8.96

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 28 May 2017

The DVD itself is great and in perfect working order.
The story itself is too good to be true although I have the book to read to see if it matches. I read that Elizabeth Huxley (the Author) did say that her mother Tilly was never as clean as Hayley Mills character portrayed. Perhaps it was the era that the film was made or the budget...who knows.

5.0 out of 5 stars Series 1 - Outlander (Historical romantic/drama), 5 Dec. 2014
Based on the books by Diana Gabaldon, this series is a feast for all the senses. Beautifully filmed in Scotland this is a historical fictional drama/romance that will keep you wanting more. As in the first book "Outlander" (or "Cross Stitch" in Australia) we meet Claire and Frank Randall on their second honeymoon in Inverness rekindling their marriage after being separated during WWII. They arrive during the feast of Beltane, a Celtic May Day festival and encounter some interesting events taking place. Later Claire who is interested in natural medicines, takes a trip out to Craig da nun alone. She innocently walks through the stone circle, hears strange buzzing sounds, places her hands on a large standing stone and faints. Upon walking she finds she is in the middle of a skirmish between the Redcoats and Jacobites in 1743. As a wartime nurse, she has seen many bloody battles and dealt with wounded men but when she meets a courageous young Scot called Jamie Fraser, Claire is torn between her desire for Jamie and returning (somehow) to her husband Frank. This is the most amazing production as the actors have all embraced the characters, and with Ron Moore's direction and Diana's guidance, they have woven the threads of the story together and created this masterpiece. It is a love story and a historical drama, it will draw you in and like many fans from all over the world, you will not want their story to end. Loved it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Slowly unwinding grief, 29 Jan. 2013

This review is from: Genova [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
I did like this film very much. It is not a big blockbuster with a happy ever after ending. It is a journey with a start but no ending.
Colin plays a widower looking after his children, after the sudden loss of his wife. He moves to Genova to start over. The film moves very slowly and gracefully along as the grief of these 3 people is played out. There is a feeling of continuity towards the end of the film, that life does goes on (even though the movie ends) as the family come to terms with their new life.
Genova the city is beautiful old city, with amazing scenery, winding streets, interesting people and has a history. Some of the camera angles (from high up or from a child's perspective) gave me the sense of how easy one could 'lose' themselves in a such a place. The grief that could easily destroy them, ends up bringing them together in the end. It is beautifully made.

And When Did You Last See Your Father? [DVD]
And When Did You Last See Your Father? [DVD]
Dvd ~ Jim Broadbent

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Film - the disfunctional relationship between a Father and his son., 29 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Jim Broadbent gives a wonderful performance as an imperfect Father. The relationship between the son and father is strained at the best of times. As the son grows from childhood, to his teens and then to an adult the audience feels his guilt, his despair, his humiliation and the choices his father makes that impact on the family. As an adult (Colin Firth) craves his fathers love and praise, as he hardly got any in his childhood or youth. Nothing seems to have changed over the years. Then the son really begins to 'see' his father with all his vunerabilities and weaknesses...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mother's love is too BIG to measure., 22 Sept. 2008
School teacher April Epner (played by Helen Hunt)is a 39 year old woman who is desperate to have her own child. Her husband has left her (with the words "I don't want this life") and her adoptive Mother passes away. When April meets her 'birth' Mother (Bette Midler)she begins a new emotional journey - through a serious of events - she learns why she was put up for adoption. She also sees her adoptive Mother with new eyes.

April commences a new relationship with a parent at the school (Colin Firth) who has two young daughters. She finds out what it takes to be a parent and the sacrifices that you make and the love that you have to give to another person.

Over the course of the film these relationships teach April what it is to loved as a daughter, part of a family, to be "seen" as a Woman and to understand that a Mother's love for a much wanted child cannot be measured.

Helen Hunt also makes her debut as a Director, co-writer and producer. If this is her "style" then I hope to see many more films made by her. This is was a beautiful film as parenting is quite an emotional subject but there are some quite comical bits in it as well. Look out for April's OBGYN when she goes to the Doctor on two separate occasions. Quite funny moments.
(Colin Firth fans will not be disappointed. If you loved Blake Morrison's "When Did you Last See your Father?" then you will love this film also.)

If you, like April are not yet a parent but are desperate to have a baby then this film may be a bit heavy going.............bring the tissues, a box of maltesers and a good friend shoulder!
