We found this very useful on a trip in September 2014 - excellent routes taking in much of interest - easy to combine with walks.

1.0 out of 5 stars Looks good but doesn't do the job, 21 Sept. 2014
Looks good, surprising quality feel for price, timing mechanism is a simple twist to the time required but the 'ping' when it reaches the set time is erratic - doesn't happen half the time which rather defeats the object of a timer!

3.0 out of 5 stars excellent illustrations, maps, 17 July 2014
Covers a lot of ground so inevitably a broad sweep, authors well known in the field but not an academic book - more a beefed up Osprey - a lot more content. Well produced, excellent illustrations, maps, line drawings, an easy read. Good value.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing indeed. Having lived and photographed in Aida, 17 July 2014
Very disappointing indeed. Having lived, photographed and worked with young Palestinian photographers in Aida camp on the separation wall in and around Bethlehem I looked forward to seeing Koudelka's vision and interpretation. I'm afraid, to me, that these images lack all the things I look for - a distinct conceptual approach, compositional style, print quality (especially in terms of tonal quality of monochrome images), selection of vantage points etc. Thev images are 'muddy', often out of focus, and its frankly quite difficult to see how many of these images were selected. Above all - it doesn't do this important subject justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you buy just one photo book this year, make it this, 1 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A high- production value book in this new series - as is the Alex Webb edition companion volume. Full of amazing images beautifully re-produced. Fink produces some very memorable images - Jean Sabatine's sixtieth birtday, Truck (just a bottle on the side of a truck - but what an example of how to make an image out of 'nothing'), Martins Creek, English Speaking Union, Picnic, The Horvath Family, Blue Horizon, Houston Texas etc etc - and the same sense of style is applied to such a variety of subject matter.

Fink is not a humble human being (I certainly can understand the thrust of the critical review by Omani) and he certainly over-sells' some of his images, seeing too much in them but the best images are worth it and the text is spare, enigmatic, penetrating, profound, mysterious, provoking, illuminating, (yes, occasionally infuriating and irritating) but overall, inspirational. But don't buy this if you are expecting a more conventional 'workshop' book - and some people will hate it ! Unless you are a real fan, this selection is the best introduction to Fink's work - I found his Social Graces collection rather disappointing - and at the price of just over £10 it's a great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stimulating book where text and images are equally important, 30 Jun. 2014
I find it strange that some reviewers seem surprised, disappointed and/or critical that this is not a 'workshop' book and has no 'practical' impact. The Webbs were never going to produce the kind of book such reviewers seem to crave - as Alex says 'It's not for me to tell viewers what to find in my photographs; it's for them to discover'. This goes for the book as a whole - you'll discover a lot here - if you reflect on it - but it's more about the essence of photography than the nuts and bolts - Larry Fink's companion volume is exactly the same in this respect.

I really like the 'spareness' of this book - this is the essence of a photographic approach in text and images - there's no long and complicated theorising - just the core ideas, clear and to the point - in a book that has high production values.

Alex Webb has done something very difficult in the modern photographic environment - created a unique personal style - and he explains and illustrates the evolution of his approach and the core of his thought-processes extremely well - such as the 'crowded frame'. There's a fundamental honesty here - street photography is 99.9 percent failure. Webb's images are so different and challenging that they take some looking at - always a good thing in itself. Bland they are not; they stand out from the crowd. Some of his images are just brilliant and always stimulating and provoking. The juxtaposition of text and images with Rebecca Norris Webb works well as a device - although personally I would have probably preferred a full volume of Alex Webb.

I think there's some fundamental 'practical' advice embodied here -but you need to discover it for yourself.
