Amnesia
Amnesia
by Peter Carey
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Muddled, 6 May 2016

This review is from: Amnesia (Paperback)
A change of direction for Peter Carey. He seems to be trying to get into Keneally territory - harder edged with politics and social history. However it doesn't really work - it's muddled and unstructured. Maybe its written only for Australians who know their history , but the political and historical background was largely lost on me. OK, it could be an allegory for any country, but it's not well done. I missed the painting of the big landscapes and the finely drawn characters. The characters in Amnesia are, I suppose deliberately, stereotypes - drunken hack, ruthless businessman /crook, activist naive young people, unwelcome immigrant, actress with angst prostituting herself for money. The three time frames running through the book are OK, but that technique has been handled better by others. I read it all the way through, a bit of a flog, and it just fizzled out. I think Carey trying to be a bit different, but not carrying it off..

2.0 out of 5 stars The foolish boy looked through a prism, 6 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It's lightweight book, short on analysis. The revisiting of the stories of the 1989 activists is OK, if one knew nothing of the background. However it is pretty well all well -known sources raked over. Lim mentions the demonstrations that took place at the same time in several other cities, but she just mentions Chengdu, again available sources, and does nothing about digging into what happened in other cities. One wishes for Frank Dikotter !
( I walked through the mass crowds in Tiananmem Square in 1989, and have been regularly visiting China for some 35 years ).

PS. The Elvis Costello title is picking up on a Lim line about how the Chinese Government have changed the prism, such that old events are seen in another way. 'And the foolish boy looked through a prism, and sees what is, but doesn't see what isn't' .
By coincidence I was reading Amnesia by Peter Carey at the same time. 'He admitted freely that he not only made up quotes, but had also been accused of making up quotes, but never of quotes he had actually made up'

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect service and a good tyre, 23 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Perfect service from tyres-outlet .Amazon said it was in stock. I checked with tyres-outlet . They confirmed quickly. Ordered on a Monday, delivered on a Friday. None of those tyres in the UK, and I needed one to match the other three - hit a pothole.
I'm on my second set of these Vectors. ( Octavia 4x4 ). Good grip on ice, snow and mud. Fine on wet or dry roads. Wear rate same as any other tyre.

Chinese central Asia,
Chinese central Asia,
by C. P Skrine
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Record of another time - long gone., 26 Dec. 2015
This review is from: Chinese central Asia, (Hardcover)
Lucid and descriptive book of a place that amazingly still existed in 1923. No paved roads, no motor vehicles, no trains, no planes.
The area covered is the Tian, ( or Tien,) Shan in the far west of Xingiang in China, with some journeys into the Pamirs. Skrine was the British Consul General in Kashgar. ( Eric Shipton later held that post ). Skrine needed to move about to perform his duties, but also seems to have had plenty of spare time, and went on long explorations with his wife and trusted servants. At that time the local people were still living pretty much as they had for centuries. The area was part of China , and they exacted taxes, but did little else. Many travel and exploration books of that time are absurdly flowery, but this is not. An English Lady in Chinese Turkestan , Lady Macartney, is also worth a read, but that one is flowery !. Her husband George Macartney was Consul General from about 1898 - Skrine's predecessor. Fascinating character, ( read more about him ! ), but he did not write a book. All this is the Great Game period.
Skrine's book is difficult to find, but Pilgrims Books of Varanasi, India, have an excellent reprint with many plates and a coloured fold out map. I bought my copy at their branch in Kathmandu. They do mail order.

1.0 out of 5 stars Junk, 8 Oct. 2015

Used a few times, then the pivot pin broke. Just arm pressure, not standing on it, nor using a piece of pipe as an extension. Strange pin design weakened by two grooves cut in it. Sheared at the groove. Now has 12.9 capscrew in it. That should not break.
I have longer breaker bars, of unknown make. Never broken one of those.

One Summer: America 1927
One Summer: America 1927
by Bill Bryson
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic History, 1 Jun. 2015
Bryson did it with a Short history of Nearly Everything, and he's done it again
An eclectic list of characters from A to Z - Al Capone, Babe Ruth, Charles Lindbergh to Zane Grey. Subjects ranging from aviation, fascism, baseball, presidential elections, prohibition, the talkies, financial scandals. eugenics etc. It's all real history exhaustively researched. With most authors' pens it would be dry and boring. Not so with Bryson- all woven together with a light touch, and a lot of acerbic wit. A big book which just rolls along. A lot on the breaking of baseball scoring records. I did not understand baseball before, and still don't ! However I know that in 1927 the USA was consumed by baseball, I suppose as the UK now is with football. Those obsessions influence a country.
Because Bryson has spent so much time in England, there is something of the Naipaul like outsider's eye about his perception on things.
I've learned a lot of history, and been well entertained in the process. A nice blend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incisive and very readable, 7 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There are travel books and travel books. Eimer's book is far more than this - it is a hugely in depth look at what is happening to the ethnic minorities in China. Eimer knows the country, speaks Putonghua, has a big network of contacts that get him into places that others could not get to, and he never gives up ! His 'recherche du temps perdu' about Kashgar from the 1980s rang true. I also started travelling in China then, for business . Those times are long gone !. One minority used the phrase that they were 'treated like Pandas' - it's an apt analogy. It's a very readable book. Additionally if you have an interest in Chinese politics, and how China views and treats it's ethnic minorities, it's all there. If you want to get a feel of how China views others round the world, read this book, plus China's Silent Army - Juan Pablo Cardenal. PS. I have an official book on the ethnic minorities published in China in 1980 - real Panda stuff !

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendous, fresh, & comprehensive, 7 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Tremendous book. A huge amount of on the ground research, by journalists, which makes the style fresh and accessible. At times I wished for some data tables and summaries; but to be fair, the writers are not academics. This is the best really up-to-date book I have read on China's expansion into the whole world. ( And I read a lot about China, and travel there regularly ) Read it !
I then read The Emperor is Far Away, David Eimer. That book is also excellent and deals with China's ethnic minorities. How China views and treats its ethnic minorities is a mirror of China's approach to any other country.

Tolerance a bit out - tight in sockets, but made it fit. ( Samsung and Denon sockets, so they should be correct ).
Old FM aerial works well for DAB.
