5.0 out of 5 stars very creepy, 18 May 2008
This review is from: Nicci French: Secret Smile (DVD)
I found this after seeing a clip of possibly the most terrifying (yet strangely attractive) thing David Tennant says in this, you'll know it when you get there.

Brilliantly acted by all, it was gripping and unexpected; you really feel for her as her life begins to fall apart around her. David Tennant was fab as always, very creepy, particularly as he appears as crazy, but also extremely clever and vindictive.

I really enjoyed it, watch it if it sounds like its for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't stop watching . . ., 7 Jan. 2007
I loved this series, ten hours of riveting near death experiences, betrayals, twists, turns and new characters. It's true that the team faced lots of these threats before (bombs, interfering superiors, traitors or not) but the situations are new and the new characters react differently. I Iiked Dany and zoe, but Adam, Zaf and Jo work well together in the same way that Tom and the other two did. Losing Fiona was bad, but the plot was good, building on something we knew since Tom left. Portrayal of Adam afterwards was well done as well I think

No one else so far has commented on Juliet as a character. I really like her, Anna Chancellor is perfect as a strong powerful woman not afraid to say what she thinks on all occasions.

Also, most people here seem to be saying either you like 3 and 4 is bad, or 3 was a blip and now we're back on track. I've likeed all seasons so far, but I think this one might just be my favourite, particularly because of the Ruth Harry thing. Not exactly unexpected I know, but still.

Basically, It's definitely worth getting if you liked the other seasons.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant and moving, 28 Aug. 2006
I absolutely loved this film, it did justice to the book, cutting but not detracting from the power of the story or its moving nature. The film centres around Justin Qualye, an english diplomat who takes up his activist wife's quest, abandoning his 'keep our activites seperate' 'loyalty to the governement' and generally stiff upper lip attitude. His passion for his wife, Tessa, does not die with her, but is shown in his search for her killers and in finishing the cause that she died for. The film is good, with a more satisfying finish than the book, which stops a bit short, the funeral scene is a good way to close. I strongly recommend reading the book as the plot is strong and the parts cut from the film are definitely worth reading as it will give you a fuller story.

As for technical stuff, a friend said that the hand held camera style made her feel a little sick, but I didn't even notice it. The african scenery is beautiful. . . baisically, watch it, it will change your perspective, probably make you cry and in general leave you thinking about it for days. Definitely five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm crying., 28 May 2006
This review is from: Garden State [DVD] (DVD)
I adored this film, truly. It's characters are well developed and believable without being predictable or cliched. The people have real problems and cope with them, or not as the case may be. I didn't really want to watch this film to start with, I was talked into it by a friend (I love you for it Lorna) and now I'm watching it (and crying) for the second time in 24hrs. You can understand his struggle to surface from the numbness and to start to associate himself with life again and not cut himself off from it.

synopsis: andrew largeman hasn't been home for nine years since his mother became paraplegic (is that right? i cant spell) and in a wheelchair. He is home for four days, and meets all his old friends and sees how they have changed and stayed the same. His friends, however screwed up, show him how to seize life again, and he begins to feel.

5.0 out of 5 stars not nesscesarily comfortable, but very much worth reading, 28 Oct. 2005
I fell in love with this book (no pun intended) the first time I read it. Murdoch does not make us sympathetic towards any of the characters, as they are all at fault for what happens to them.
Mor is an ageing school teacher, feeling appart from his tedious and ever scolding wife, and disinterested with his life and its monotonous progress. This changes however when a young artist arrives, having been commisoned to paint a protrait for the school. He emmediately feels attracted to her, even though it takes some time for him to realise she feels the same way. There are many wrenching scenes near the end of the book, where his 2 lives are clumsily merged with devastating and irreversible consequenses. The ending is beautifully tailored and not in the least abrupt.
This is definately a book to recomend, but perhaps not the thing to cheer you up on a bad day.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic chemistry, 27 Oct. 2005
I absolutely loved this film. I watched it for the first time on a long flight to the states, and many a tear did slip down my face, escpecially Peter's scene when he rips up his play. . .I think the interaction between freddie highmoor and Johnny depp is just fantastic. This is also shown in Charlie and the chocolate factory which i advise everyo9ne to see. Some people have described this film as being to fairytale like, and too perfect, but I think this one sits right on the good side of perfectness.

4.0 out of 5 stars hollywood crap, or decent?, 13 Oct. 2004
i rather liked this, it was not so shallow that you can just sit and watch it while semi comatose. Its got some scenes that are not just about the amount of hunks that have been cast in the key roles.
good watching, not rubbish

5.0 out of 5 stars horse whisperer, 23 Aug. 2004
This is such a great movie. After I watched it for the first time, I cried for about half an hour because it was so good. This is quite a slow moving film, a very good choice if you like romantic films. There are 2 focus points to this film. The first one is the mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) and her relationship with her disbled daughter (Scarlett Johannsen). The second (and main one) is the growing friendship between Tom (Robert Redford), the horse whisperer and the mother.
This film features excelent performances by all the main characters, escpecially Robert Redford and Scarlett Johannsen in her pre-'girl with a pearl earing' days.
