5.0 out of 5 stars What Really Happened in the War in Burma, 14 Feb. 2014
I am disappointed by Richard's unhappy personal special needs which have coloured his review unfairly. When this book was first published its recognition by those who knew or who cared was universally high. Mango's analysis is more balanced. The style of the memoir is particularly skilled and the details given both historically and humorously are well worth reading. Historians find valuable reporting of what actually happened during the war in Burma and afterwards in the East Indies. The story of rearming the Japanese prisoners for defence against rebelling local nationalists in what had been the Dutch East Indies is very well told and probably a unique occurrence. Similarly, the account of one man freeing or finding a camp of female prisoners! I would, as a professional academic historian now retired, recommend this book particularly highly. For the more general reader, I would say that its style makes for easy reading with humour interspersed with solid facts. Worthy of five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coffee Works, 26 Dec. 2011
The De'Longhi ICM40 Front Loading Filter Coffee Machine Digital is not the first coffee maker I have bought but it is certainly better than any of its predecessors. There may be more expensive machines but this one makes great filter coffee, is easy to programme, loads fairly cleverly, and is easier to clean than most machines. It is clever, too, in that it switches itself off after 2 hours! Recommended.
